tack drivers&one hole groups

This is a pretty typical group for me. Range was 300m with my Sako TRG 42 in .338 Lapua. No it doesn't drive tacks but it sure makes the critters nervous. My Sako TRG 21 in .308 Win probably could drive tacks IF I would consistently do my part. On good days at 100m I can shoot RAGGED one hole groups all day long; what would that make it, a .4-.5 moa gun?

This would have been about a 5/8" group if not for the flyer, but thats why this is a typical group for me; four good shots and one f**kin flyer!

That's why I started shooting 3-shot groups...

Stubblejumper. To Me, a one-hole group is any group where all the shots in that group overlap enough to prevent any paper from making a bridge between any shot. Now if that happened to be five shots strung out in a line, I would not consider that a good group, but if they are in a cluster together, and consistently will do that, I am pleased. :) As For Tackdrivers, I own several. I would not hesitate to shoot at the tacks holding the target up with at least 5 rifles I own, and I believe the target would fall after the exercise!! :D However, I usually make comments that indicate what I am talking about, such as "One Ragged Hole" for a group. Anyone with more than 3 neurons with synapses to match should be able to figure out what I am talking about. ;) FWIW, I have at least a half dozen groups shot over the years where it is difficult to tell if more than one shot was fired. :) Regards, Eagleye.

Well I think E/E nails it with this post. That is exactly my take on one hole groups.

This thread serves only to nitpick and illicit controversy over terminology.

But I like controversy:D

To me a single "one hole" group is not the answer anyhow.... but a CONSISTANTLY accurate rifle is what I crave... the ability to shoot a load into decent groups EVERY time.. to the same POI!

EY

That is ideal to me, as well.

I would take a rifle that consistently makes 1" groups and is a reliable rifle over the rifle that gives you 1 one holer one day and a 2" the next..

Instead of a tack driver, I have a spike driver that is a worthless, ugly, inaccurate bubbad 303 brit. the brass butplate is effective at 3 foot range to drive tent spikes into the ground. with minute of meter accuracy. Stubble, the terms one hole and tackdriver are lexicon of the shooting sports. and merely try to explain in one word that a *paragraph would normally.

Well I can say for one, that I have never tried to shoot tacks.Nor have I ever been able to shoot every bullet through the same hole.Below are three groups shot at 100 yards with my 300 ultramag one morning while developing loads. The top group is the closest that I have ever come to putting three shots through the exact same hole, and I have never duplicated it since.

Very nice shooting!!!!

Tacking gun

I used to do hunter class shooting in Ottawa at Stittsville shooting Range
5 targets with 6 targets within one, one on lower right is sighter you can fire as many times on sighter then one shot on the other 5 with a time limit, max scope 6x weight can not exceed 10lbs
I have seen my brother shoot 250 out of 250 with a stock Rem 700 HV .222
and then shoot the tacs that held target on board
I had a Rem 40xb .222 that I have hit all four tacs. Took quite a few trys to hit all four in a row. You are at a advantage shooting the .308 over the .222 just because of bullet size. these guns where true tac drivers. and many of the shooters could hit the tacs, now mind you this shooting is done of benches with front rest and bags on rear, scopes had TK Lee 1/4" dots, canjar triggers.
My brother would fire a 100 cartridges over chrono just to get 15 or so what he called matched brass. With the same velocity to use in his matches. neck turn etc etc. but he was tough to beat. He built a .223 in a Rem 700 with a 26" hart barrel, this gun will shoot under .250

One shot one hole groups

Every one of my rifles will shoot one shot -one hole groups! I hope yours will too.

I realise that this isn't the same as what you are talking about but I have been spending a lot of time at the indoor range with my 10/22 lately. I got bored with just shooting targets so I began shooting the tack holding the paper up. It's quite difficult to do it when in the standing position with irons but I have done it a bunch of times. I don't think the other shooters have cuaght on But I think some have started to suspect something as the box of tacks is getting quite low. So yes my ruger is a tack driver. Just not a one shot, one tack driver.

Okay, put it this way...

Do you want the rifle that gives you 1.5" groups all the time, and shoots to the same POI all the time, or do you want the .5" grouper that may or may not put that first shot where you point it?

The point is reliability, and consistency.;) :D

a consistent .5" grouper will always be always more apt to put the first shot where you want it and will be more accurate than a consistent 1.5" grouper. if it dosent then it isnt a half inch grouper

Or should I call it something else, wouldnt want to upset anyone here. Gotta make sure we are polliticly correct these days I guess

:D

Sweet shootin' Crazy_Davy. Here's a target from my 14" bbl AR-15 I shot last fall. Certainly not the best but you can see why I love my AR. I keep the group section on my fridge next to the spelling test I passed in grade six back in '69. If my grandma comes to visit, hopefully she'll see both and give me $5.00. The flyer is a bit of a piss-off. The circle below is a bunch of sighter shots. Too lazy to walk out 100 yds. to change targets.
