I am thinking about getting a tactical 22 to practice with and to have something fun for my daugthers to shoot (age 7 and 4). I was thinking a tactical 22 would be something that would work for both.

I want a collapsible stock so I can easily adjust it for the kids and the option of flush fit mags as well as extended units.

I was thinking of the Mossberg but I am not thrilled by the fixed carry handle. I want to teach the girls with iron sights but it would be nice to have the option of putting my AR scope on for my own practice.

I have and will have more extra
AR bits laying around (carry handle, M4 butt stock). Maybe I should consider a 10-22 and a Nordic kit?

Ultimately it will come down to price.

What is the most cost effective option for a non-restricted AR style 22.
 
You can take off the rail and use the iron sights. However, the sides of the carry handle kind of get in your field of view. But it's not that bad.

Having said that, I vaguely remember hearing that a new version of the tac22 was coming out with no fixed carry handle.
 
The Mossberg would be a real pain to clean and just feels cheep to me... spend a few extra bucks and get a 10/22(non-restricted) or a M&P15-22(restricted)

And it's heavy if you plan on letting your children learn to shoot with it. I have (had) one and my daughter had a hard time lifting and holding it up.

The mossberg may be the best for weight, but like the above poster mention, could be hard to clean having to take it out of it's shell. Sometime late this year Mossberg will be releasing a flat top version that gets rid of the carry handle and a shorter forearm.

There are several dress up kits for the Rem597 and Ruger 1022 if you want to go the "tactical" way.
 
10/22 and Archangel kit (M4 looking). Does all you want AND will fit small kids - tested

Rem 597 would also fit in this stock and should be less money to buy but so little toys when you want to play more.

I'm currently having the same debate, however I am looking for a rifle for myself only. On one hand a lot of the reviews on the mossberg are positive, with most remarks being the gun feels cheap and is hard to clean (or atleast a real pain to clean). I haven't personally held one myself, so I can't say. With all the reviews on youtube, I am having a hard time finding anyone that shows it's accuracy. I have held the vtr at a gun show and I like it's feel, however again, I haven't shot it. I will likely end up with a new vtr unless I can find a good deal on a used ruger. Ideally I would love to shoot them all before I decide, but I can't see that happening.

Now that I am how I can browse with my PC instead of my phone. I checked your site and I think the archangel kit will be ideal for what I want and cheaper than an SR 22. I will be keeping my eye out for a bargain on an 10-22 and then I will be in touch. (I also added up all the money I have spent on EE lately and whoa....I've got to slow down at bit :D)

I was shooting the mossberg 22 yesterday- it was a friend's so I'm not 100% on what was stock or not. it was light, easy sight in and even with the scope out of alignment (a totally different story), I was still hitting a palm-sized grouping at 50m.

I'm no expert, but I found nothing wrong with it. Plus, it's and intimidating looking gun (until one realizes its a 22).
