The trend now a days when shooting at long distance targets is a heavy for caliber bullet with a high Ballistic Coefficient, and this is for good reason. As many already known a Heavy/High B.C. bullet will be less affected by wind and retain a higher velocity at long range.
What I think some people over look is that your bullet has to actually be accurate at long range as well. This is the main reason I like to fire the 155gr Amax in my 300WM as it is the most accurate bullet I have tested. The 155gr also recoils noticeably less which can aid in accuracy. I have a .308Win that loves heavy bullets and prefers 175-190 bullets. Get out and shoot a range of weights because you might find your rifle may shoot heavy/light bullets better. And as Dogleg pointed out once you start spinning the scope turret flat doesn't mean much when shooting paper targets.
I want to point out that if you have a factory barrel you might not be able to seat the lighter weight bullets out as far as you might like to due to a long throat/freebore and the bullet being short. As well long seated bullets might not fit in your magazine.
I have some 155gr Lapua Scenar's that I am ready to test out and the fact that it has a BC in the same range as the 175SMK is out standing. If you want the ultimate in accuracy at long range stick with match projectiles like Scenar's, SMK's, AMAX's, Bergers, or custom made Matrix, Chinchaga's. And you can't beat QuickLoad as far as custom load predictions for your rifle its a great program.
