Tactical Bolt Actions

Looking at getting a tactical bolt action as my next purchase and was looking for any input from owners.

On my list is:
CZ 600 Trail (seems super nice and well built but the one I held at Cabelas has an extremely sticky bolt, it was dry however. Normal?)
MRA Renegade
Black Creek MRX Bronco PDS
Anything I may be missing

All come in 223/556 which is what I was looking at for med-long range target as well as coyote/varmint hunting.

Any and all experiences and input welcome!

MRA Renegade may have the stench of a cope gun but on its own it's an entirely decent rifle. Good ergonomics, fun to shoot, tons of customization, well manufactured.

IMO, tons of fun with a 12.5 barrel and an aggressive brake.

CZ re built like tanks but not the slickest. But they work. Also. The Tikkas are excellent options.

Alternatively you can get a good bolt gun and put it on a tactical chassis from MDT.

They look like a complete PITA to break down for cleaning though, aren't they? Have to remove the stock to get the bolt out every time?

True. You do have to remove the stock for cleaning. I don't personally find this too much of an issue but it's no AR in disassembly. In addition you aren't putting that many rounds through a bolt gun so cleaning is less frequent.

I have a Tikka CTR in 223, love it! The tac a1 is a nice rifle but a heavy beast (mine is in 308). I far prefer shooting the CTR, accurate, lighter than the Tac A1

All true, I have a 2nd GEN Renegade that I love. Keep in mind that it's no AR and has no gas system that fouls the action with your carbon/oil crap. There's not much cleaning required apart from cleaning the copper fouling after a few hundred rounds. You can do this from muzzle, I know, sacriledge, but it really doesn't harm the muzlle if done properly. I take mine apart once a year to do a thorough cleaning, no biggie.

I’ve got a MRX Bison in .223 and it is fantastic for smacking plates in the bush. I ditched the break and replaced it with a flash hider and that helped a lot. The mags are awesome. Feed perfect and it’s a game changer to have 20 rounds in a bolt gun. Mine likes 55 grain reloads. The only issue is it is a heavy ##### for the size. However, it seems tough as nails.

Watching and waiting for the answer(s) you will get to your question. I too would like to know - no kidding here.

One could argue the same thing that makes a semi automatic rifle tactical, or a shotgun tactical. The emphasis seems to be on compact, using aluminum or polymer elements (specifically NOT wood) and has attachment points for various optics and other add-on accessory elements.

This seems to be a rather arbitrary definition.

The definition of tactical generally revolves around its use in military or LE applications.

Most LE bolt actions are not compact - at least not compact by most people's definitions here if going off of inference.

A lot of bolt actions today are paired with metal chassis' or composite/fiberglass stocks. Pretty much all bolt action rifles have the ability to mount a scope. The ability to mount accessories is more a function of the stock/chassis, or scope mounts - not the bolt action itself.

The OP needs to further define what they are looking for in a bolt action rifle - the term "tactical" in the context of the OP is so ambiguous that it's essentially meaningless and makes it impossible to provide suggestions for the OP's objectives.

What would be more helpful would be to define your objectives.

- What distances will you be shooting at?
- What kind of shooting will you be doing? All prone? Positional? Off of a shooting bench?
- What is your budget?
- Any weight targets/limits for the rifle?
- Do you want DBM? Internal mag? What kind of magazines do you plan/want to use if you go DBM?
- Preference in single stage or two stage triggers?
- What cartridges are you looking at? Just .223/556 or are other options on the table?
- Do you reload, or any plans for reloading?
- Do you prefer 60 or 90* actions?
- 50/50 cocking or 100/0?
- Do you want the ability to run prefits?
- Do you want to upgrade the rifle now or in the future? If so the specific rifle pattern will matter. What kind of aftermarket support do you want (if any)?
- Any preference on mounting systems or intentions to use with a tripod? Picatinney? ARCA? Anschutz?
- Any intention of doing NV shooting?
- Do you plan on attaching any muzzle devices to the end of the barrel now or in the future?
- What barrel life would you like to get?
- Is recoil of a concern?
- What scope/optic system are you mounting to the rail? Will you need a base with built in elevation?
- What accessories do you plan to mount to the rifle, if any?
- Any preference on composite/fiberglass stocks versus chassis'?
- What is your physique? Large hands? Small hands? Do you prefer a more vertical grip or swept back grip?

no, what is "meaningless" is rehashing the old fudd vs. mall ninja debate. the OP gave 3 very concrete examples of what he is looking for. do you see anything in common about all 3?
