tactical light that will withstand 12 gauge ?

No one mentioned streamlight, i've had a lot of success with them both on pistols and shotguns. Here is my 14" 870 with a streamlight TLR-1 mounted on a cadex rail: http://imgur.com/a/G1Pbt

With this light mounted I've put hundreds of rounds of buckshot down the pipe and a few boxes of slugs... just have to wipe the lens clean after a good session and that it. holds up very nicely.

Since I took the photos (right after I finished this piece) i have installed a cable and pressure switch that is attached to the forend. I prefer this setup but unless you are some kind of SWAT character it should be fine with just the rocker switch on the light itself.

On a 870 express tactical, is there any type of rail or light mount that can attach to the front swivel sling mount at the front end near the barrel tip or is that only for sling?

Not any that I have ever heard of, not sure that I would trust mounting something as heavy as a light on a swivel that would have to handle 12 gauge either. Yours should have lots of room for a mount though since you have a tube extension (bonus, you also get to still use your sling swivel on a side mounted light).

I've got a CDM Mod-C clamp and a Fenix TK15 on mine. The light has a lens housing bigger than the body and barely clears the swivel sling band.

Any SureFire will take thousands of 12 ga slugs and buckshot rounds with ease. I recommend either LaRue quick-detach mounts or American Defense Manufacturing (ADM) if you can't get LaRue. Brownells sells ADM mounts, and they ship to Canada.

While I'm talking about mounts, it should be mentioned that you should not run LaRue QD mounts, whether for a light or an optic, on 12 ga shotguns (including the Benelli M4 and other high recoil weapons) if the picatinny rail has the center cutouts. Only run LaRue mounts on the rails that have the full bars.
I mentioned the Benelli M4 because the factory rail is the cutout style and it is notorious for mashing the recoil lug on the LaRue LT-660 or LT-661, which is used with the Aimpoint Micro T-1. So you have to get an aftermarket rail such as the one from Carrier Comp or Freedom Fighter Tactical.
Also, if you run a SureFire M80 forend for the Benelli M4 and you want to run a light, you have to run an ADM or similar mount on the side rails as they have the cutouts. See pics below. The ADM mounts have a full recoil lug/bar and will not mash this style of picatinny rail.

Holy I feel like I went way off topic...

For example:

This style of rail is safe for all LaRue mounts (it is coincidental that the pic is from LaRue):

Do not use LaRue on this style of rail (use ADM mounts), as the LaRue recoil lug will mash the inside edges of the cutouts:

this is great thread, great info shared here... now I just have to find who has what I need in stock and my 870 will be tacti-cool !!!

Then I just need a new follower, saddle, new forend, thermal imaging scope, etc.. etc..

Closest I've found is this:

Local shop had one, so I figured I'd give it a try. The look of it does not inspire confidence, but if it breaks they said they'll warranty it. On the plus side, it doesn't complicate takedown much at all.

EDIT: Oh, just googled your model, and this won't work the way you want. It does work, however, for my 870 with the standard integral 6-round tube (no extension).

I think I will go for mod c clamp, very clean looking. I kind if like the triple rail clamps as well, giving you left, right, bottom options. Talk about tacti-cool!

If you decide to go with a QD mount, the Vltor QD offset mount is one tough SOB and very versatile. Best $80 I ever spent.

Warriors & Wonders in Vancouver carries LOTS of Fenix lights.

Just delete the space in the addy.

Yikes there are 100 models... how to pick one I wonder?

Edit: PD-32 with ALG-01 flashlight mount looks sweet!

Also check out the foursevens maelstrom and quark turbo lines they are very good also.

The only real difference between sure fire scout lights and regular fenix / 4sevens lights is that battery compartment in the surefire has springs on both ends so the battery head doesn't smack forward and break the circuit board on the emitter. The foursevens maelstrom series also has SHOCK-ISOLATED BATTERY COMPARTMENT just like the surefire.

FYI: The Fenix TK15 S2 and TK22 U2 also have double springs
Warriors has both in stock :)

Fwiw, the BEST forend I've ever used on my 870 Police is the GG&G modified Speedfeed forend, which is found on the 870 Police and Tactical, etc models. Wolverine sells them http://www.wolverinesupplies.com/details/760/GGandG-870-Tactical-Forearm-Flashlight-Mount.aspx

I've tried pretty much every forend for my 870 and this one takes the cake by a long shot. So clean and simple and very effective.

Is the rail only mounted on the right side or can it be switched over to the left?

If I had to guess by the looks of the picture, I'd say the MOD-C is closer. Dunno if it's necessarily a good thing since as it is now, I can see the shadow of the barrel and mag tube when I turn on the light.
