Tactical Semi-Auto Shotgun?

Get what you want. There will always those who attempt to persuade and dismay you based on their own beliefs.
Tactical is a dirty word here, some will ask you to define it as to derail your quest, others will recommend you steer clear of the hyped up genre. Get what you want.

i cant stand shotguns with pistol grips, sorry but thats a pet peeve of mine, completely useless!
Stay away from express models!
Just get a Remington 870 marine magnum stainless, it'll last you your lifetime and more!
comes with a sling so thats your tactical bit!
btw im probably buying one for my xmas present or a nice revolver.
- just quickly pointing out that the marine magnum is not stainless, it's electroless nickel plating on carbon steel, same as the Mossberg mariner.... for stainless (barrels only) it's either the Browning bps All-Weather or the Winchester 1200/1300 Marines.

Dont bother with a Remington 870 Marine Magnum. Get a Hatsan Marine Guard instead. Much better shotgun at half the price. I picked one up a few months back and I'm thoroughly impressed with it. Remington quality has been down hill as of late. The clones of the 870's are better or equal quality of the Remington ones nowadays.

If you want a reliable semiauto, it will cost you
If you want an cheap semiauto, it will suck
If you want affordable and reliable, go with a different action

My newly acquired Beretta 1301 Comp model feeds on everything, OP, the 1301 is also avaailible in the "tactical model". the main differrence is more on the bbl. lenght, tactical comes in a cylinder bore and not threaded for chokes, etc., Irunguns and Phrophet River can import them for you. After taxes and shipping pretty close to $1500.00

OP: IMO the best tactical semi's are the Benelli m4 and the Beretta TX4 Storm

Beretta 1301 is the resurrected TX4 with some minor improvements or changes whatever you call them, This is not my obsevation since havn't handled the TX4 in person, but people who used or still has them. most of the parts are compatible, interchange between the 2 models.

mow a few local lawns, shovel a few driveways, stop the nagging and complaining and buy yourself and BEN M4 smile and on with yer day

I had the opportunity to shoot an M-4 a couple of days ago, I liked it more than the M-2 I'd tried previously. I'd buy one except that my old 590 does everything I need a shotgun to do. This one had the weird looking (to me anyway) pistol grip and cheek piece, and I didn't expect to like it, but it felt fine. Even with a light hold, shooting slugs was controllable. The ghost ring and post was very quick to pick up, and unlike a bead, it was precise. The trigger was better than I expected, but it is a $2K gun.

Is there a downside to semiautomatic vs pump action?
The primary disadvantage of the semi-auto is regulatory and doesn't reflect on the quality of the guns themselves. A short barrel pump gun is non-resticted provided its overall length is 26" but a short barreled semi-auto is restricted. A pump can have an extended magazine, but a semi-auto cannot carry more than 5, that sort of thing. Because the trigger groups on semi-autos work similarly to most modern pumps, that is the trigger releases the sear, and must reset before it can fire the subsequent round, so the trigger feel and quality is comparable amongst guns of comparable quality.
