Tactical shotguns?

OK here is probably the dumbest question ever on CGN's!

I see tons of posts about tacticifing shotsguns. My question is what do you do with them after the conversion? I have a couple of friends who are LEO's and Correction Officers who have tacticals but what is the regular Joe using them for?

Same reason people sup up their cars to go a gazzillion km/h even though the speed limit is 100
 
Its not just tactical, its for the most part pratical.
Tactical shotguns are use alot for bear defence, caming gun, Guide gun.
As well as action shotguns.
The practical/tactical shotguns are the most underestimated firearm you will own.
I have more use for shotguns then anyother gun i own.

OK but what are you doing to have fun? I am just curious what there is to do with them. What I mean is that for example a 12" barrel takes trap shooting out of the mix!

What is a caming gun?
 
Tactical is defined as the thing or the touch that is appropriate for the given situation. So it depends upon the situation.

I use a 14" barrel for IPSC 3-gun, because I want to, but - from what I've seen - the most Tactical shotguns for 3-gun (meaning the most competitive) have super-long, duck-hunting-length barrels.
 
I just checked out the three gun sport, that looks pretty cool in a Dirty Harry sort of way. do many gun clubs offer that facilty, the only one around here offers a SASS range but none of the urban deal. I just asked my friend in corrections and he is into the three gun event, only differance he said that in a riot they rebound their rounds off the floor and take you out at the knees...ouch

I do it to stop the screaming voices in my head, "build it and they will come". :D :p I just haven't figured out who's coming yet.

Better get back to "tacticifing" :) that 870 again.
 
The tactical shotgun in my opinion is a well balanced tool for both close-range defence, camping, outback backup firearm or for punching paper and having alot of fun. A simple, pump or semi-automatic action shotgun that is compact, rugged and even souped up with tonnes of tactical gear should be an addition to any out-doors going family household. I mean, you COULD call the MNR while your family is getting mauled and wait a few days for them to find you, get out there and clean up your bodies, but personally, I would much prefer roasting fresh bear meat over the campfire with said family. :)

Well

I'll start off by stating the obvious regarding the vast majority of firearm ownership/use in canada.

It's largely recreational/sporting so the firearm itself ends up being a product of the owner/user emotion/passion/imagination etc.
Whether it's a assault rifle/sniper rifle/old west hogleg or tactical shotgun.

That aside there are plenty of functional/applications for the "tactical" shotgun.
A short/light/compact/featureladen shotgun is directly applicable to uses such as close range hunting in tight/dirty/challneging terrain.
A short shotgun I would argue is actually safer in these enviroments too.
Nothing worse than toting a 30in barreled 4ft overall weapon thru the tight bush and or when climbing/slogging tough terrain.....recipe for a problem.
A 14in rifle sighted shotgun is pretty much ideal for this application.
The other obvious application is for predator defensive purposes.
Again a short/light pump shotgun is ideal here where it needs to be carried/packed/transported and importantly sometimes out of sight.

Our inane Canadian firearms laws push anyone looking for a compact/powerful firearm to a "tactical" shotgun as one of a couple choices.
Ironically there is nothing safer than a properly holstered pistol for these applications but we are all subject to the "every gun will be used for a crime" mentality.
Oops...starting to rant and preach to the choir! LOL

Anyway. There are plenty of actual functional uses for what is referred to as a "tactical" shotgun in addition to simply wanting to buy/build/have/play with one.

Competition, hunting, and defensive purposes.

I guarantee that even left wing persons who are otherwise firmly against the principle of firearms possession would change their tune when presented with a predator situation where they or their loved ones are face to face with a predator intent on harming/killing them (regardless of how many legs or thumbs it may have).
Ah crap!....ranting again.

It also, like any other passion, is easy to get carried away and addicted.
I admit to having built/own several "tactical" shotguns that are actually not so tactical and are in fact quite silly...and very KEWL!

are they talking about rebounding rubber slugs off the floor or buckshot?:eek:
 
If you get into tactical anything, you will need a full length mirror for extended periods of dress-up, practicing your bad ass face and reciting your action movie one liners. Also, you will need a digital SLR cause most of the shooting you will be doing is glamour shots of your guns surrounded by knives, loose ammo, glasses of scotch and multiple passports. Cheers,
