Hi,

looking for one for my 13 years old son. He is into video games and wood is not appealing to him.
He wants 'cool' stuff, I know I know, but that is my chance to get him away from the TV screen and make him spent more time ouside with me. Now, is there anything out there non restricted that would appeal to next generation that you guys know of?

Appreciated.

or if you are okay with a restricted that's actually cheaper than an SR-22*, the M&P 15-22.

*note, SR-22 is the name Ruger uses for both a .22LR pistol and a .22LR rifle, so don't get too confused if you see both coming up in a Google search. ;)

Walther HK G36-22 is nonrestricted and tactical

The GSG-15 (Scar replica) is popular and very price friendly

There are various military-like replicas like the

Chiappa M1-22 carbine (m1 carbine)

Pietta PPS-50 (PPSH 41)

and the new coming out GSG MP40-22

I have 3 teenage kids, 2 of them video-game-playing-boys..so I know where you're coming from. lol After years of back and forth on topics like this, and, in giving lots of kids their first shooting experience...hitting targets is way more rewarding than flying brass. I mean...show a kid a bolt gun and an AR-ish looking rifle and for sure...they'll pick the black gun. However, who is most likely to stay engaged longer, and stay shooting longer? In my experience, new shooters will put semis down way faster..and be less likely to ask to use them on round 2.

Let's face it..scoped bolt guns have some appeal too...and certainly show-up often in video games.

Depending on the age of the kids, reactive targets through a scoped 22 will take a LONG time to get old. The easier it gets with experience, the targets get a little smaller and/or pushed-out a little further.

If it needs to be a black gun, non-restricted, the Ruger SR-22/Remington 597 VTR/Kel Tec SU-22/the GSG stuff/the G36 clone/Anschutz...lots of options. Search the EE here first.

Many video games have sniper characters using bolt guns.
May be a Savage bolt gun with a black synthetic or boyds pro varmint stock.
Tell em its a squirrel / bunny sniper rifle, also fun for the range.

If you have more cash may be replace the Savage with a CZ 452.
Good Luck

I got my Son and Wife to build their own .22 they wanted. Best way to get them involved and they get exactly what they want.

He got a MKII TR.

Let him know what the budget his... next thing you know he'll be on CGN trying to find out what the best deal is for this or that.

Initially, having them "focus" while at the range might be a challenge. Having fun targets helps a lot.

A few $$ worth of toy soldier/tanks from the Dollorama goes a long way.
- build cardboard house, with hostages and bad guys
- Give the kid a "mission" with time/ammo restriction

Also have luck with plastic animal, to take them on gravel-pit safari!

In winter time, defeating hoard of mini-snowman is also fun

Savage FV-SR. Add a scope w/ tactical turrets and a fake suppressor + bipod. This is a TR-SRR with a shroud, a FV-SR would look similar with a can (but without the heft) and a new stock

What a great idea.

This would make a new shooters eyes light up.
I would get some cci quiets as well even though the can isn't real:)

Working with a young group of new shooters, they all flock towards the tactical looking rifles. They shoot target trees, auto reset targets, and generally have a great time. When they tire of making noise, we set up targets, and out come the single shot guns, or mag fed bolt action guns.

While most of them still enjoy the noise makers, their thinking and shooting has shifted to more accuracy all on its own. I still have the semi autos for fun, but now own more single shot and bolt guns to satisfy the kids.

Funny how things work out. When I started shooting, I wanted nothing more than a semi auto... a bolt gun was an old mans gun... and a single shot was positively neanderthal.

now Its a struggle for me to get any time behind the single shot guns *sigh* Especially in gopher season, I get stuck with the SH*tty semi autos.
