Took this today out on a walk. Their M4 rip off uses a gas piston upper. everyone I know in the army here says they suck, but they sure look cool!

Portable razor wire?

exactly. Apparently, it used to be deployed 24/7, untill a little kid got messed up playing with it...security got on my case for takin pics of the installments...One of the dudes un-holstered his pistol one day when I went to ask him a question...they are VERY sensitive, as I guess you would be if your neighbour was China, and they didn't like the cut of your jib...

Here's me overhearing the guys discussing on the radio what to do with the strange foriegners takin pictures...RUN!

CZ52, most of thier army crap isn't copies of US stuff. It IS U.S. stuff. Their last generation of aircraft was like a page out of the CF history-F101's, F-104's, F-86's, F-5's(which they still use), DC3's, Huey's(again, still used), and I even glimpse Herc's flying around with regularity.

As for getting one of thier M4's home with me...I doubt it...I'd much rather have the chrome plated M14's they use for ceremonial guard duties!

If you wanna check out more of my pics, I've included a link to my flickr page in my user profile.

ollie,
you are lucky you did not get arrested, you are taking pictures of the presidential palace, I advise you to becareful...

I think your hat saved your ass, but oh boy, try taking pics again with a Mao hat....

Those guards are holding the T91 carbine, and yes it is a piston driven AR15.

Taiwan may still be technically at war with the commies. There were routine daily arty duals between the two countries until some years ago.

twyeh is correct. Taking military or defense related pictures in any 3rd world country without permission is risky business and not recommended.

The Taiwanese airforce now has F16A&B and Mirage 2000. Not exactly state of art but enough to hold the commies at bay for the time being.

That reminds me of the last time when i was on a mountain hike here in S Korea and wondered too close to the boundry lines/razor wire fences of a army base i found up there (i certainly wasnt in it...but i was taking some photo's  ). I set off some alarm and had a speakerbox alarm go off and some armed guards with their dawoo K2's start walking very briskly towards me. Sure they wont shoot some random white guy wondering around but it sure raises the blood pressure. You have to be a bit cautious in these Asian countries ive found, guards don't want you talking to them for some reason either.

looks like he got wet in the rain to me.
dude be careful with the pics, good way to meet up with "the man" over there that's for sure.

If they threaten you over the photos declare that you're going to establish diplomatic ties with the PRC instead of the Republic, they're desperate for political recognition.

I almost ended up in trouble back in the 70's when Taiwan was still under Martial Law for complaining about their airport passenger treatment. The Airport guards were so strict back then that transit passengers were not allowed to wander around the airport and they basically make you sit in one corner of the waiting room. They make you wait while they process your travel documents at their own pace, keep your passport with them... make you leave your unnecessary belongings in a safe staging area/storage before they take you to the hotel for an overnight stay to accommodate you for the next day's flight.

Mind you the squad of marching airport guards around the Chang Kai Shek Terminal back when I was there were not as short as these guys in the picture. Those military guys at the airport were broad shouldered 6-footers in Marine haircut and looked very intimidating.
And by the way... those guys back then didnt looked like they pissed in their pants:D :D :D
