Who shooting what, who likes what, and why?

The 4 up for consideration are:

Ruger 10/22 Takedown
Marlin 70pss
Browning SA-22
Henry AR-7

Purpose would be for plinking/pest control and to pack on camping trips. No considerations for scope mounting required.

Im leaning towards the 70pss

Never owned the others on your list, but love my 10/22 stainless Takedown. I purchased it for similar applications as you, and it's been stellar.

I have shot the SA-22, but prefer the handling, operation and aesthetics of the 10/22 TD.
 
I picked up a stainless 10/22 take down off of someone here on EE. I love the rifle. It shoots really well and eats anything I feed it. If I was still hanging, I'd be taking it into the woods every chance I get.

I put a red dot on top of it and it is a great little plinker.
 
Owned a browning and still own a marlin. Both are great in there own way. Sold the browning to fund a revlover. Sill have the marlin papoose. It's carry case/size/weight better suit my needs for a take down as its more for canoe tripping/back packing as does the stainless/plastic. The browning to me was just too nice to put in a portage back pack.
 
I have a ruger takedown stainless. Very nice little kit it comes with, I find the standard sight to be quite broad however may have to look into my sight options s on that rifle.

I have always wanted to try out the Henry ar7 just managed to end up with a 10/22 first. Size - wise for real packing it through the woods and tossing things around in the ATV the Henry may fit better in your backpack from looks of it.
 
I have the Marlin and the Browning (70's Miroku production).

Love them both, but the Papoose gets used a lot more. Accurate little takedown, packs nice and small, I have it scoped and no troubles at all with return to zero. The ProMag 25 round magazines (have 6 of them) have been boringly reliable - other than the last round bolt hold open.

Not a fan of the 10/22 platform. My 10/22 was fun when you could use the drum mags, for shiznits and giggles, but my 795 could run circles around it for accuracy. Now that the RedCoats banned high cap mags for the 10/22, there really is no point in it any more for me.
 
I too have the FN of the sa-22. Slick little gun! Packs up in a small package. It will fill your sleeves!lol
 
Had Browing and Henry, still have Marlin.

The Browning is an engineering marvel, strips down to firing pin in seconds without tools. Downward eject cool - may need elastic to seal sleeve. Okay accuracy, cantilever scope rail on newer ones limits utility of take down function. Wanted to love the stainless synthetic but sold it for a T-Bolt. Regret sell the Belgian.

The Henry sells the concept but execution lacking (materials and function). Sold without shooting it.

The Marlin is accurate, has last shot hold open, simple mechanical bolt hold open/release. Case has enough room for mags, 4x scope, compas, fixed blade...

Dont own 10/22 takedown, do have LEVH and one with Allen gunworks trigger group and DLASK barrel otherwise consider Marlins 795s and 60s superior.

Hence no 10/22 takedown and prefer PPS70 (also good for kids size & weight wise).
 
Not a 'take down' but a Norinco JW15a backpacker is pretty compact and the synthetic stock makes it quite utilitarian enough for packing
 
If its just for plinking and you want something cool, try a Henry Lever rifle with a small straight 4x scope. 14 rounds of pure unadulterated fun.
 
I have owned my browning s.a. for almost 40 years. It has put more meat in the pot, eliminated more pests and plinked more targets, than anything I have ever owned. It is still in good shape and I would not hesitate to put it in a back pack and rely on it in the woods. They are beautiful, classy little rifles and comparing a Ruger to it is sacrilegious.
 
take a look at the cil/anschutz 470. It take a little more than the 10/22 to take down but its just one screw that u can use a dime to put in and out . better build quality and accuracy than the 10/22.

I already have a Henry Compact 22, I agree it is just a joy to plink with. Pretty darn accurate too.



It is compact, but I'm interested in giving a takedown style another go.
 
I have a 10/22 TD with an el cheap Tasco red dot. Works like a charm. Rides with me everywhere. I work for a big farm, so I take it on all the machines. Doesn't seem to have trouble with taking it apart every night. Picks up zero every time, so far. I am not taking it to the Olympics, so I find it quite useful and with synthetic stock, bomb proof.
 
I find the marlin papoose pretty loud for a 22. Its the one I own that makes me want earplugs. I guess that's to be expected from a short barrel. It feels like a toy but is cobvenient to throw on the quad so it gets a little use
