So I had my 12.5" grizz taken down today. barrel / forearm etc off. and I'm thinking, man this thing would pack down small if it wasn't for the stupid mag tube fixed to the receiver.

anyone ever try to make a thread on mag tube? it probably wouldn't be too hard.

then you could stick the barrel, mag tube, forarm / bolt, and stock/receiver into a small bag.

something to look into for the next set of grizzlies canam? :D

any mossberg will do it.

the problem is that it is still a pretty tedious process just to pack a gun unobtrusively. a true takedown firearm should be able to be taken down/assembled with just 1-2 steps and within a few seconds.

if you really want something easily packable look into a SxS coach gun type thing. they take down very nicely into 3 pieces with just the flip of a lever on the forend, and can be had for $200ish.

I've been searching for something I could put in a backpack and actually thought about getting the grizzly. Never thought about the mag tube until "scott" brought it up. The SxS is a good idea but I would prefer semi auto. Is a SxS better with extenal hammers? anybody know. cheers

Or perhaps a coupler with thumbscrews to tighten/loosen the mag tube? the couple itself would not need to be threaded, and you could replace the hex head screws with thumb screws or something like that...

just an idea

Edit: something like this but nicer :p

either of those would get in the way of the forearm. (and add more weight). the tube inside would have to remain pretty seemless if you joint it, or you'll end up with feeding issuses. rounds getting caught up in the tube.

I'm looking at my 870 right now and i dont think it would be a problem if you used countersunk screws (like those allen head screws), providing that the walls of the coupler aren't very thick..

Or an old Stevens 620.

As for making a coupler it might work but think of the time needed to install the mag spring and follower each time it was disassemled.

a 12.5 inch grizzly is around 32.5 inches long. When the 8.5 inch version comes along it will be about 28.5" long. This is pretty short already and you don't need to fiddle with reassembly. The carbine shotgun is ready to go. I think the take down feature would be impractical but it does add a gee whiz feature to it I suppose.
