Went to Cabela's today and checked out the new Takedown 10/22. I later told the wife about how coll it was and she decided to buy it for me as an early Christmas present.

I stopped at the gravel pit on the way home and loaded the factory 10 round mag with the bulk Federal ammo from the olive drab ammo tin. Shots 2-5 all jammed, double loading. I later tried my Butler Creek 25 round mag and I think I managed to fire off 2. Then I couldn't get it to load at all, the bolt wouldn't close.

The salesman told me at checkout that Rugers work better when they're dirty, and any time he cleans his 10/22 it jams for the first 100 or so rounds. Is he right or did I get a blem?
 
I would love to use this opportunity to bash the much hated 10/22 but i think on this issue it's a simple case of you not cleaning the rifle before using it. All new firearms should be disassembled, cleaned, re-oiled and reassembled before use.
 
He told you that as you were leaving the store with a new rifle??
Or was it a return?
Something smells fishy - although I agree with Cyclops: every rifle I have ever bought, new or used, I have stripped down, cleaned and inspected. For what, I'm not sure, lol...

But my 10/22 worked right out of the box - mine's not the takedown though.

Using CCI Blazers? They work best in mine. I have NEVER had a failure with the 10 round "rotary" mag. Again, I don't have the takedown, so sorry if I'm off-topic a bit.

Try different ammo. If it stills does that, its try returning the rifle. You got a defective one.


My 10/22 takedown was super right out of the box and I never have problem after cleaning. The seller is bull####ting you
 
I'm going to guess it's the ammo you're using. Semi 10/22s need ammo with higher tolerances so something like the CCI Standard Velocities or Mini Mags would probably yield much better results.
 
My 10/22 (not a takedown) works best when it's clean and freshly wet lubed. As the round count builds up (+200) it starts to stovepipe and FTE, I spray some WD40 onto the bolt and chamber and it runs well for another 100-200 rounds and after that it's time to clean it or practice FTF drills.
 
bought a takedown recently as well , shot it out of the box no problems with factory mag or butler creek mags my drum mag had some problems but went away , was using federal in the blue/black box

You start to get stovepipe and fte at only 200 rounds???


Is spraying wd40 the only cleaning you do??

I clean mine only when I start having issues with it and is usually around the 3-4k rounds mark... But I clean a little better than just spraying wd40.
 
I have multiple 10/22's, including several takedowns. One of my take downs had a couple FTF's when I was trying out different ammo types with it. This was new out of the box with it, I if I recall it was bulk blue/black box federal 525 round boxes, or how ever many come in them. Anyway,..I striped the entire gun down (Even took the trigger assembly down. Stripped all the factory shipping grease off of everything. Re-lubed with my favourite gun oil,..and now it spits out pretty much anything I feed it. (Except several 22 shorts that snuck into my bulk boxes somehow).

YouTube has some awesome vids on how to totally disassemble the entire firearm. Do that, and then report back with your results.
 
WD 40? Technically, WD40 is not a lubricant. Classified as Penetrant, Water Displacer, Rust Inhibitor and not a lubricant. It somewhat provides lubrication but not a lasting one. And few instances, it is slightly abrasive. I only use it to soak gummed parts but I have to wipe it out completely. Then, use gun oil accordingly. IMO, it is your gun, still your choice of what to use.

I have heard some gunsmiths say wd-40 is their best tool. Repeated use causes actions to gum up and makes them business dissasembling and degunking inoperable firearms!
 
I find using Remington Dry Lube delays the buildup. Was using a wet lube in the bolt and in the receiver but the carbon sticks to it and accumulates more quickly.

Is spraying wd40 the only cleaning you do?? No, when did I say that WD is the only cleaning that I do? However when the kids are shooting 500 rounds during a single range session, I use WD to keep the action cycling.

I clean mine only when I start having issues with it and is usually around the 3-4k rounds mark... But I clean a little better than just spraying wd40.

I tear down my 10/22 when it gets gunked up maybe every 2000 rounds and clean with a degreaser, then Hoppes 9 and then CLP and grease on the rails
 
I have a takedown. Cleaned it before my first use. Shot 375 rounds of cci mini mags, i had About 5 stove pipes but came to the conclusion that it was 1 bad magazine out of 4 (hc3r's). Since then I have shot another 500 winchester M22's no issues. If it's not the mag then I'd say it's the ammo. Not sure about the ruger working better when it's dirty. I clean mine after each use and it runs great.
 
I also have a takedown. Didnt bother to clean it from new, got its first cleaning after about 1k rounds. Other than a few FTE's, FTF, (which is pretty much common with all .22), the gun shot flawlessly. On a further note, I shot 7 different types of ammo (3 different remington, winchester bulk, federal bulk, winchester "black", and cci standard 40gr) and the gun ate up everything.
 
Did you follow the instructions on adjusting the barrel nut? ive heard a few cases of guys just tossing it together and getting the results you got, something to do with it not seating the barrel and receiver correctly. Mine right out of the box i put probably 500rnds through it, Crappy bulk green box remington tornado with a few other brands mixed in. Maybe a handful of jams, could hammer a 25rnd mag in no time flawlessly.
 
I know what happened the Triagle metal piece that holds the bolt open has to be pushed to release the bolt. It doesn't have an auto bolt release. Human error on that part. The ammo sounds like Winchester ammo try a differen't brand or better ammo.

Look at the bottom of the trigger outside the trigger guard that sucker has to be moved by hand to release the bolt. You push it up to lock the bolt back then pull on the bolt and push it again so it drops down and the bolt can go forward.


PS I learned this on a non takedown version just went what the heck the bolt is locked back.

Also when you take the firearm down make sure you pull the bolt back or you can damage it ie parts lock onto the barrel they can bend and break.

Only adjust the barrel nut if you can move the firearm ie it feels sloppy and twists a little. The browning takedown 22lr rifles are the same way in that regard.

They say use any oil for a stuck bullet to get it unstuck. You just let it sit and slowly work its way through the firearm then take a rod and hammer and pound it out that's what gunsmiths do (use a brass rod if you can) I had 1 squib round primmer went off and the powder didn't it was weird.

No they don't. The sr22 I had would shoot anything no matter how ####ty the ammo was. It would shoot anything really good group wise but it would feed and fire everything. My marlin 60 will shoot everything Ive tried in it as well.
