well ive done it

1st payment is down on a Savage 200 in .223

this is my first 'precision' rifle .. i went cheap because what im going to use it for doesnt require HBAR or benchrest stock .

so its cheap plastic for now. i will be interested in getting an HS precision stock sometime in the future if they make them for this rifle.

will have a suppressor also :)

i went savage because ive heard they are the best bang for buck . and .223 can be used on everything i'll hunt here

anyone got any advice on what to do next ?

Lucky little New Zealand punk...hehe...good job. My buddy just move to Australia, Queensland area. i told him when i come to visit that there had better be a suppressed rifle laying around somewhere..hehe.
 
Bed the action and free float the barrel first off. Then Trigger and Stock.

If it is the REALLY crappy cheap plastic stock, you may want to reinforce the fore end right away as well.
 
Look for a deal on a factory Savage varmint barrel, a lot of shooters will switch out the factory barrel (in all it's glory) for a slick azz after market one and you could snatch one up. I'm not sure what you're looking to hunt but if they're small and numerous like prairie dogs then multiple shots may have to be taken in quick succession, and that my friend is when the heavy barrel comes in handy.
 
Grab some 75gr Bergers or amax over Varget (it goes by a number in Aus) lit by a CCI BR4 or 450 primer (whatever equivalent) in Win cases.

After bedding and free floating, you can definitely look at lightening the trigger. timney makes a nice set as does Rifle Basix. If you can get this stuff, a nice add on.

Nice optics, a bit of polishing to make the bolt lift easier, go have fun.

I bet you find a load that is around 1/2 min out to 200yds.

PS I think it is pretty much a requirement to paint the stock.
 
dont worry jerry i already have a camo pattern set out for the entire rifle

its a greyish polymer stock , looks cheap to me, i thought about reinforcing the forend as cyanide said too as i imagine it will have a bit of movement.

as for Australia .. im not sure if they could have suppressors over there.. they basically cant get anything cool .. :D tell him to move to NZ

a bit off topic, but what are the firearms laws like in NZ? what do you have to do to get your licence and cool stuff like a suppressor?

we have to set a multichoice test of which we can get like 2 questions wrong.. there is also 7 questions on the 7 main rules within the test, if you get one of those wrong, you fail . but its piss easy .. and an arms officer comes and checks that you have a place to safely secure a firearm..
luckily for me my arms officer is the national NRA full bore champ and i shoot target 22 at his club .. so i had no worries getting it :D

as for suppressors ... you just hand over your card or cash and they give you a suppressor. there are no special provisions for them . some companys will ask to see a copy of your license if you are getting one custom made, as you have to send them your rifle. they want to make sure its legit .

as for the rediculous side of our gun laws.. no flash hiders, no free standing pistol grips, and no bayonet lugs ( on semi autos ) unless you have your E-catagory license ( or military license )
 
You can have a Suppressor but not a flash hider? How F'd up is that?

I am sure many here would prefer a silencer over a flash hider.
