taking a white tail with a 22-250

In Manitoba, using a caliber less than .23 is not "recommended"....what year this came into being i do not know.. but in years past i have taken a few with a Parker Hale .22-250. All at less than 75 yards. Shot placement is the most important part.

It can be done but is not recommended due to light bullet weights and the fact that most of the softpoints available for it are designed for varmint use. As Nestor has subtley pointed out, it is not legal for use on big game in many areas either.

So does a .223 and a .222 This type of post comes up every fall to stir the pot.Usually "experts" who have never shot a deer with the round in question have all the answers.

Legal in Ontario.

Shot an Impala with a 22-250 once. Killed it. And sice African game is sooooooo much tougher than deer (according to the experts anyway) I'd expect a whitetail to shuffle off its mortal coil without due delay to a well placed bullet.

I know a fella who has done it successfully many times, but I keep asking him, "why?" He has many centerfire rifles and more appropriate calibers in the 6mm to .30 cal range... I don't get it unless one has NO option... but I suspect there are few of those.

Choose a bullet of proper construction and choose your range wisely. Put one in the boiler room and its going to be game over. Is it ideal? Probably not. Will it do the job? Yes.

Where im shooting is in an old apple orchard and the range is less than 100 meters. The rifle shoots 1 moa all day long. I have lots of other rifles but this one is special to me as it is my first build from the ground up. There are many large white tails that come to this valley and the one ive been looking at is pretty nice. It is legal in new brunswick to hunt with 23 cal rifles so keep the bs out of it please. Just want to know from some one whos done it and what were the results.

This... I built a .17 from the ground up... Screw sentimentals... Take what you need to get the job done efficiently...

It's not legal in a lot of states and provinces because there are to many " long range hunters and snipers " out there. Seems like half the world thinks a 300 win is min for deer or gophers since you shoot a deer in the ear or tip of tail it's dead lol
