Taking all suggestions for first time gun purchase

thanks for the advice
IMHO just like rifles, a 22 it the way to START. Its just easier to learn the skills involved. IF your son can excel with the 22, he will do the same with the 9. You might just save him correcting bad habits along the way.

For a 22, Rugers are my choice, For a 9mm cant go wrong with the CZ-75.

I hear you Jimmie A
We will eventually make our way through the variety thatss out there but just wanted to get him off on the right foot and he can evolve from there
The 22LR is a good gun to have as it is so cheap to shoot. I always take a 22 to the range and shoot if first. In this country in the winter outside you always loose brass in the snow. A revolver does not loose brass. A .38Special/.357Mag is a good combo as it is tame and a little wild if you want. Than you have the choice of single action or double action. The DA is faster to load and unload and more expensive. The DA you can shoot SA or DA so this is easier to handle to start with, less trigger pull. A good quality SA Ruger revolver is in the range of $5-600. I'm a big revolver fan as I reload and hate looking for brass and they are easier to shoot IMHO.

Now all the cool people on here have Glocks, it is like a religion so you have to have a Glock or your not cool. And never ever question their religion!

I would start with something that allows you to shoot single action. With less trigger movement you will get better results. Any double/single action would do, but CZ, Beretta and Grand Power are some of my favorites. It is really helpful to pick up and handle some options before you decide, even if you don't get to shoot them.

if you've got money to blow, get something other than .22LR. if you wish to be fiscally conservative, then I would say look at your .22LR options.

don't be fooled...while the .22LR isn't the biggest round, when you have a semi-auto pistol, you have recoil and you've got to learn control. friend recently learned that with my Browning 1911-22. he was scoffing at my love of everything .22LR until he shot that and realized it's not so simple.

for .22LR pistol's, you've got a # of choices.

Browning 1911-22
Ruger Mark III or Mk11 22/45
Browning Buckmark
GSG 1911
Glock w/.22LR conversion kit
and the list goes on...

take a look at sponsor websites and review all the .22LR pistols, revolver and semi-auto. you'll see all your options! :D

Hello,

Used M&P 9. yes, its not perfect... But, it gets a you an american made pistol, that is easy to take apart and find spare parts. it gets you shooting and to the range, where 99% of the shooters will let you shoot a few rounds from their guns for comparison.

Spend $500.. After a while.... the gun is still worth around $500

Funny thing about guns... get 2 shooters in a room and you will have 3 opinions!!!

Thanks twoguntim we are trying to put our hands on as many as we can before we buy.
We both have fairly big hands so that comes into play as well although most manufacturers have all the grip sized add ons now

i went with a shotgun first, lots of fun to be had, but then, ruger 10/22.........after that you need to explore your inner russian, many cheap and very good options

Thanks we are currently shooting the ruger mark III and the buck mark as they are the club guns and are all we can use until we get past our probationary period. Love both guns they have alot of snap for a small calibre and although we do hit the paper there ain't nothing to write home about yet grouping wise but that will come I am sure

My first was an M&P 9mm, loved it.....so I bought another one.
Can't beat it, reliable, feeds pretty much everything, easy to strip and clean, and they seem to hold their value
I bought a nice safari land holster and a couple mag pouches and it's a nice setup

Whatever you buy, enjoy it

the m&p range kit seem quite popular and are good price wise

If you are shooting at the Welland club, you are probably shooting an ancient Ruger MKII, and a S&W 41, a very expensive .22., unless the have changed guns. That 41 was a real nice trigger.
