Taking Care of Oil Finished Stock

I have been using "Old English" lemon oil for close to 30 years (mom had a bottle under the sink). I use it on every wood stocked firearm I own, from my Ruger M77 to my Hawken muzzleloader. It has never let me down. On my rifles with bare wood it penetrates well. Stocks with a varnish (or laquer finish) it glosses them nice, I don't know if the oil helps the varnish or not but I don't have any peeling or bubbling like some rifles I've seen. I just gently rub a good coating on the wood and let it sit overnight, If it is soaked right in it gets another coat. After a day at the range or field my guns get cleaned and oiled (maybe overkill but I enjoy "playing" in my gun room). After a while the wood will season up nicely. The nice thing about it is the price, about $3.00 a bottle from Walmart, Zellers etc. Come to think about it I never did buy my mom a replacement bottle.
 
1 part turpentine, 2 parts double boiled linseed oil...mix thoroughly and rub in. Don't put it on thick and leave it wet, rub it in often...good for wood. Don't use "gun oil" on wood.
