Taking Kids Hunting

Does anyone know what the regulations are (in Ontario) for taking young people hunting. I've got a February goose hunt organized this year and my 10 yr old nephew would dearly love to come along. Naturally I want him to get interested in shooting and hunting!

Now i know for sure he can't shoot or carry a gun, but is there any reason he can't come alone and watch?
 
Can he swim..... just kidding David, there is no legal problem wiht taking him along. I think it is a great idea, I don't need to give the hearing protection speech do I...;)
Kids and Hunting is mandatory in our camp!:)
 
That is the best way to insure that there will still be hunting in Canada twenty years from now.

I try to take young folks and their dads, whenever I can. My wife hunts as well, and she tries to get the moms to come along. We have recently had a family of four out huntinf this fall, mom & dad, son & daughter.

It works!

My hunting buddy took his 11 year old boy out for the first time this year. He loved it (other than maybe when we field dressed two mulie does... he described that as being "nasty"), and now his younger brother wants to get out as soon as he's a little older. No doubt getting youngsters involved is one way to ensure hunting is allowed in the future.
 
Best to call the MNR and find out. Most CO don't have a problem with it but some of them are S*Bs. The definition of hunting in Ontario is lying in wait, worrying, molesting ..... regardless of age or having a gun or not.

Get the name of the CO that you talk to at your local MNR office. If you do run into problems you have a name to give.

My great uncle took me hunting when I was a wee lass of 11 and I've been a gunnut since :D its a good way of getting kids out of trouble and get them interested in guns and the great outdoors....
 
I took my 6 yearold son out hunting[he's 32 now-and an avid hunter]When he was 12 I let him carry an empty rifle-just to get used to carrying it.After a couple of years he got a licence and shot his first buck
 
Got my friend and co-worker hooked on hunting (age 33). His young son, 5 years old, comes along when we go clay pigeon shooting (he pulls on the machine under supervision... he loves it). The kid also assist's us when we clean game... we satrted with rabbits, showing him the heart, intestines and such.

His son now wants to follow us in actual hunts...a wee bit to small... but I guess he's on the right track! :) :)

Can't wait to get kids of my own...

Guys, keep introducing people to hunting...people fear what they don't understand. A short small game hunt is great to demystify hunting to newbies.
 
I don't know if there IS a legal age for someone to fire a gun, providing they are within (set) distance of the licensed shooter.
If it's hunting, they need a hunting license, which I believe the minors age for a license is 14yrs old.

I've taken my daughter goose/duck and grouse hunting. She loves it, and she's 5 yrs old.

Like "Why Not" said, it's the only way we can insure we will have hunting in the future. AND, it gives the kids respect and education, not only for wildlife, but for firearms as well.
 
As of 2005 Hunting Regs, you must be 15 to get a licence with parental consent. Sixteen without. There's no reason or law that says a 10 year old can't go with you. However, his attention span may not be long enough for him not to get bored sitting in a stand for hours.
The Harris Conservatives dropped the hunting age to 12 with supervision in 2002. McGuinty's gang said they would stop it.
 
at 12 they can start hunting here in ontario they must take the hunter safety coruse and pass ( which most kids score higher then the adults:p ). Then they are alound to hunt with some one 18 and older that has a hunting lic but there can only be one firearm that they share .When he/she turns 16 they can get a minor permit from CFO that will now let then carry there own firearm but the still have to be hunting with a nother hunter 18 and older that is lic and with in eye sight, After the one year is up mom or dad can remove some or all of the restriction from the minor permit . At 16 they take game on there on tags befor that they shoot on your tags As far as the CO go's alot love to see young kids out with mom or dad hunting BUT there are some A-Holes out there that will charge you under the fish and gams act saying that the kid is hunting under what the reg's say .I would get hold of the MR in the area your hunting and talk with the head infocement officer and ask him if so get him to put it in writing (lots of luck getting it in writing ;) )

nope not a problem take him :D
in BC he could even get a minors hunting license so he can shoot off your tag but he has to be at arms langth.

a phone call i just got:D from my grandson:D
he is nine..he would not give me list of what he wanted for xmas..so lazy me gave him cash..
but he just informed me him and his dad(a none hunter)went out and got him a bb gun:D ..he said he is gonna learn to shoot so he can come hunting with me..
i cant wait to go up there and shoot with him:D
 
Right now I am putting my two into archery classes - it's only $6 an hour for a 10 week course and they will go on Sundays. You should have seen their eyes when I told them they would start in a week!
 
I started 'hunting' with my pops, when I was 8yrs old. To say hunting I mean that I hiked with him thru the bush lookin for grouse.. Saw the game wardens almost every trip and they never had a problem.(25 years ago tho..) I actually started carrying a sling shot when I was 10. The best memory I have was at the end of the hunt my cousin and I sat by the truck (with supervision) and would take turns shootin off a box of 22's. I took the hunter saftey course @ 15 and have been hunting ever since.:D

This spring I am taking my 6yr old turkey hunting with me, and I plan on taking the pellet gun for a little fun afterwards. IMHO, start em young, if they love it, keep goin' if they don't, don't push it. They will probably come around later:rolleyes:
 
I took my eldest son Caribou hunting last February, he was 10 at the time. My younger son was with me for Bison harvest, he was 8 years old. Both have been moose hunting with me, both fish with me, they hunt ducks and geese with me, and they both enjoy the experiences we've had and the memories we're continuing to build. They are avid small game and grouse hunters that are looking forward to their turn to shoot the big critters and water fowl. I anticipate the same with my daughter in a few years.
 
I take my boys with me alot. Was a real rush when I shot a doe with my crossbow and my oldest boy was right at my side. I also let them carry a bb gun when bird hunting. I don't know for sure if it is legal but it sure lets them practise gun handling and feel a part of the hunt.
