Taking Kids Hunting

My son, the six year old, has been coming with me since he was 3. He is natural and loves to go. He actually cried one day when I left him behind. I was his age when I started and I always carried a rusted out Cooey 22 with no firing pin that dad gave me. I always carried a knife.

When I was ten, all I wanted for Christmas was a box of 000buckshot. I got it. (and I still have three rounds left). Shot one to see what it was like and killed a charging bear with the other one at 12 feet when I was eleven years old. I will keep the last three rounds until my time here is up.

Involve the kids. Like my dad says, "Take your kid hunting, so that some day you won't have to go hunting for your kid". You know where he will be.

Here in B.C. a kid can sart hunting at 10. They can get their own licence at 11.
I started taking my oldest boy when he was 3. Hes now 12 & has 2 moose & a mule deer under his belt. All were 1 shot kills. He also shoots competitions with a Armilite M15A2 & a Colt 1911 in 9mm.

Started taking my middle boy out last year when he was 1 1/2.
Took him this year when my older boy got his deer, now all he can say is "Cody shoot the deers."

Next year my youngest is coming out after his 1st birthday.

fogducker, you should have got him the BB gun,...........not that there is anything wrong with cash;) Maybe a pellet gun is next for him.....or a .22.

And jeepingpw........ nice pics man

so is the law that if the kid is not hunting but observing he can go with or what? has that been straightened out yet i am not clear. i want to take my nephew out with me goose and duck hunting to get him started he is really interested in turkey hunting too as he saw one the other day near his house.

I'm not suggesting anything illegal here, but it was my experience from taking my lads hunting/fishing at any age the COs both Nat Park and provincial never IDd them for age or even pondered it. They just seemed to be glad they were out with the old man and his buds. So yeah I started them a bit young, the cool thing is though these days we can knock back a few beers and laugh about "remember when".
Can't hurt to call your f&w office though.

Observers of any age are allowed to go with you. Now if they are pushing rabbits out of a fenceline ( like i used to do before I could carry a gun) for example, then they are considered hunting. Oh yeah they must wear orange when the law requires but basically as long as they don't have any firearms they are okay to be with you.

I have an instructor teaching me ... no green "horn" here... just a "horny" redhead :D

I took Storm Jr with me last year for a deer hunt.

It was a PD day so he was out of school and I was on the last day of my Muzzle loader hunt.

As luck would have it we were stopped by the Conservation Officers when we returned to the farm yard.

They asked who he was an how old I said. my son he is 11.

"HE CANNOT HUNT WITH YOU" I was told.

I said he was not hunting...............he was BIRD WATCHING!

I then had him pull a pair of binoculars and a bird identification book out of his backpack!!

LOL!!!

You should have seen their faces!

They said he cannot be in the woods during hunting season.
I said.....when you go to Leaminton and charge all the other birdwatchers you can come and get us! Otherwise I will crucify you in court!!

That was the end of that issue.

lol.i have been trying to get back on topic here all night:eek: momma bear..GO TO YOUR ROOM:p

any how..went to the pickering gun show today to check things out:) i was looking for a few gun related items..but i saw a neat looking 22 there that i thought would be a great little toy to teach my grand son on:D
so i had to buy it:D
got a great price on a cooey39 single shot with a weaver4x scope on it:D

Gad! Glad the CO's around here have a different point of view. Been taking the kids since they were around 5/6 and the few times I've run into the CO's the only comment was "nice to see the kids out"!

Ontario really is a place of it's own. ;)

It depends on the CO's there are the good ones and the bad ones. If you are an ass to them they could screw you for a lot of the stupid laws. We have run into them a number of times, they are jsut doing there job and 90% of the time there are no issues. I used to go out with my Dad while he hunted deer with the bow, he is scared of heights so we sat in ground blinds, I sometimes brought the pellet gun along to feel like I was hunting too. You bet if and when I have kids they will be with me if they show any interest.
