Im going to go against the grain of this board and say that he really wasnt asking for it. Bear attacks are extremely few and far between. For every attack theres thousands, if not tens of thousands of human-bear interactions which go perfectly smooth.
Sad he had to die, say the bear had to die.
I'll also go against the grain here and say that I know quite a few experienced campers who dont own guns. If I had to choose someone to actually "survive" with, I'd likely choose one of them over a lot of people I know who own guns.
Owning a gun does not make you a more experienced woodsman. Not in the slightest.
