Taking photos of a grizzly at 50 meters before being a victim

Im going to go against the grain of this board and say that he really wasnt asking for it. Bear attacks are extremely few and far between. For every attack theres thousands, if not tens of thousands of human-bear interactions which go perfectly smooth.

Sad he had to die, say the bear had to die.

I'll also go against the grain here and say that I know quite a few experienced campers who dont own guns. If I had to choose someone to actually "survive" with, I'd likely choose one of them over a lot of people I know who own guns.

Owning a gun does not make you a more experienced woodsman. Not in the slightest.

This is a grizzly, at 50 yds. its not a black bear at the zoo...How did he think this would end??

Correct.

My point is that a lot of these types are naive about nature and think they can co-exist with predators, including bears wolves and coyotes. Well, you can't, because the predators don't want to co-exist with you.

As a hunter, I am well aware that animals can bite back, and are not to be trusted in a close encounter. Even the ones in the zoo that are used to people, will kill in flash, ie. the zoo keeper in sweden that was killed by the wolves she fed everyday...

People want to wander off and be one with nature, which is fine, but don't be stupid about it.
 
Two weeks ago in Haines Alaska we had two separate grizzlies one at 20ft while fishing salmon.They can be very quiet in their approach.for such a big animal.The first was radio collared due to his bullying of fishermen .The Troopers and Warden showed up as soon as his tracker showed he was near the river.The second bear was more respectful and sidestepped us when he realized he had came to close then backed off and took a different route to the river.There were seals a mile up a fresh water river chasing salmon .Would have liked to see the grizzly grab one of them.At 50 yards the bear could have avoided contact instead it chose to attack.I blame the bear although the man should have slowly backed off while talking and keeping a visual on the bear

Anyone who puts themselves in that sort of situation has made a choice to risk their personal safety - to entrust their well-being to a 1000lb meat-eater that makes decisions based on instinct. No thanks - I'm either armed and in charge or I make myself scarce.

Well A Canadian can't bring his 870 camping to Alaska or I would've.Pepper spray and a 12" bowie is as good as it gets.I had a too freindly black bear at Liard Hotsprings that got two softball sized rocks till he thought he should be elsewhere.Woke up in the overflow parking surrounded by police tape as a couple of local hillbillies stabbed two people that asked them to turn down their music.One guy was in critical for 3 days but made it.Same trip had a 1/2 yellow black bear swim the Klondike River to see what fish we were catching.Strong swimmer as be went in a straight line in spite of the current 100 yards in about 20 seconds.We had departed by the time he hit our shore......Harold

If I'm standing two feet in front of you, facing you, I'm in your space....
Three feet, five feet, when am I out of your space?
Dominant predators (top of the food chain) have big spaces....
At fifty yards, there is no doubt that the victim was in the bears space, and posed a threat.

The only statement that I agree with in your post.....too bad about both bear and man dead.

Guessing that you're not living in g-bear country....

Likely had a mother. I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the amount of compassion on the ole' world wide web. Not surprised though.

If the guy had been a bow hunter it would have likely been all glowing epithets and 'died with his boots on sort of stuff'.

Bad Luck and maybe a lack of judgement got this guy killed. Who has walked back into an elk kill in G bear country? Walked into your tree stand at 3:30 AM in the pitch black?

There was an incident a few years back when a hunter met his maker and a momma bear- doing just that. Would we all be smug and throw natural selection and Darwin wisecracks about that?

Glass houses and all that stuff.

Give me a break... stupidity on this idiots scale does not deserve sympathy... What about the people that had to clean up this douche bags mess after he was killed? Hmmm??? The responders that had to go in a kill the bear, the responders that had to bag and tag the morons remains... Nope sorry I don't care if he were a seasoned super duper hunter armed with a .500 nitro express... You act stupid and die stupid, means you were stupid.
 
This person definately was out of his element and doing something he should not have been doing. He could not have been a seasoned outdoorsman with any bear experience.

Although supposedly being unpredictable, there are always signs from a grizzly that he is uncomfortable with your presence, and he tells you many times and in several ways to "GET LOST". This person obviously did not know anything about bears.

I'm sure the photos will show the bear posturing and threatening several times before the attack and the photographer was just too ignorant to understand the danger HE created, which eventually ended his life and the bears, needlessly.

Hence the "MORON" comments and I personally think them to be warranted at least to some degree. Every person in Canada knows and has heard about bears and them being dangerous, from a very early age. The stories abound everywhere about bears, even in the inner cities, so to say he didn't know he was in danger just doesn't work for me.

It is people like Treadwell and his documentaries that can be thanked for these kinds of events, telling people that bears aren't dangerous just misunderstood. Idiots like him should never be published or aired because they go against 300 years of wisedom and experience. His documentary is possibly one of the most dangerous pieces of film ever aired, and he is the true MORON of all time. Darwinism and Treadwell's "Big Red Machine" did the world a great favor by not allowing him to propogate.

I wonder how many more outdoor city people, and grizzlies will die because of him and others like him. The truth is all bears are dangerous, just that some are more so than others and a healthy respect for them, and their space, is warranted at all times.
 
How is the Treadwell documentary dangerous? It shows how idiotic and mentally ill he is. What happens to him and his girlfriend is terrifying (even though we never hear the audio).
