taking the plunge(buying land)

There really seems to be a big cultural difference east and west. In Manitoba, as here in Saskatchewan, we don't have the neighbour problems Maple Leaf is referring to. Thank God! Our neighbours hunt, and we invite them on to our land at times to keep them on our side!

A past president of the Sask Prov Rifle Assoc told me how they had tried to buy land near Moose Jaw for a range to shoot back to 1000 yds. Someone in the area complained and the local council wouldn't approve the club's application. It took the association another decade before they found a place suitable for a 1200 yd range. This time the council was on side, and the North Star Range has been running since 1998.

I have found there are many Stubblejumpers who post their land. Either they like to see deer or they dislike hunting. This fall even though we had written permission to hunt on one ranch, the landowner was very very firm that they would not tolerate any vehicles off the trails. Shoot a deer a mile off the trail; drag it a mile to the vehicle. And these are people who are in the cattle business not the deer business.

Well went out there today. Here are some pics.

Ah-ha! We are neighbors, sorta. My land is a few miles south of Narcisse. We'll have to get together for a brew during deer season.

Thanks for the reply's.I thought 80 acres at $100.00 an acre how could I go wrong. Most of the land is mature poplar.I will be out there this spring chainsaw in hand cutting some shooting lanes and building some tree stands. The guys owning this property are getting up in age and just wanted to get rid of it.I obviously thought I would never be a landowner in this lifetime and now I am going to be a land owner before i'm 40.Whoo-Hoo!
:dancingbanana:

I'ld jump on it at that price too! Good on you. I've hunted up there a lot in the 90's.....wife is from north of Gimli.....

$100 an acre? wow I would be buying like 200 acres. Is anywhere in Ontario this cheap?

From the picture, it looks like a great place! How far away is it from your home?

Awsome. my wife and I will be doing this very soon as well. We live South of Winnipeg so Im going to try and find something a little South, but I guess it will be where the best deal will be. Enjoy your new land. It feels good doesn't it? :)

It is 1.5 hours from my home,Which isn't too bad.Believe me it is an awesome feeling.I do have alot of work ahead of me though.I am looking for a travel trailer to put on the prop.I am going to cut a trail 5 ft. wide from the trailer which will beon the right of picture two across the 1/4 mile of the property then hooking towards the back of the prop.I am then going to cut 3 shooting lanes 100yrds long 12-15ft. wide and build treestands. Some of this property is just choked with trees should be able to get a good pile of firewood.I still would like to try not to disturb the area two much. Thanks for the positive feedback.:)

I would suggest you check out some property/game management books (as was previously mentioned). The Interlakes area was a region that historically had lots of disturbance on it, mainly from fire. Creating patches of disturbance (on a rotation basis) may be a way to increase/improve habitat for game on you land. Those management books would be a better source of info for you.

Congrats on your purchase! Feels good to be a land-owner, eh?

Would food plots of any sort be a form of baiting? It would be nice to attract
wildlife to the property but would it be legal to do so.
