On my Dads gun there is alot of free movement before there is resistance. When at the resistance point there is about .080" gap beetween the mating sufaces where the trigger usually rests. Can I just build up one of these surfaces with tig weld and file it down till I get no slop?

What make of rifle are you talking about? Many military rifles have a two stage trigger which is designed to have a long first stage that you take up in preparation for firing. Many sporting rifles have take up that can be adjusted. I don't think I'd be recommending that you build anything up with welding, there has to be a better way.

It is there for a reason. It is part of the design. A two stage military trigger has travel in the first stage and then the trigger feels like it comes to a stop and then with a bit more pressure releases and the rifle fires. This allows quick precise control of the trigger and yet it is perfectly safe when banging the rifle about.

Your description of what you wish to do would be considered dangerous. Get used to using that trigger as is or replace it with an aftermarket single stage trigger.
