Tale of two Lugers:

I have coming to me two Lugers. I have told a Lady (who is a Grandmother) that I will sell them for the best price I can get and she needs the money to pay bills and such. I have seen then a few times but know only a bit about Lugers. One is a 1937 made by Mauser. It has two mags both a silver colour. All numbers match except the mags. The grip seem a bit darker red than seems normal but I'm not sure. overall I'd call this one good plus with a good only bore.

The other is a 1939 by Mauser in much better condition with a period holster, tool and two blued mags. Again all numbers match except the mags. The luger itself seems very close to vg to me....

I have no photos at this point so I know this with be tough but what kinda ballpark asking price should I go for. I'd like to get this Lady as mush as I can and I won't keep a cent for myself......:redface:

You might think about a couple of pathways. First, look up "Luger" in the Equipment and Exchange forum to see what kind of prices people have actually been asking. Maybe check with a couple to see what they actually got. Posting the two guns in the EE would certainly get you some offers. Second, think about listing them with a specialty dealer like John Denner or Ellwood Epps (there are several others). I don't know what per centage the dealers would take, but they might be able to get more for them. I don't know which would be the better way to go. If it were me, I'd do what you did here -- I'd call and talk with some dealers to see what they'd say about them, and make my decision after that. Maybe some Luger collector will contact you after your post here. Good luck with it.
 
Pictures always help with values / condition of a specific pistol. If you can post some it will help a great deal...

BTW I have an interest in your pistols if you want to sell....

This is what I know so far....The holster is pre-WW1 (stamp dated 1911) with the manufacture stamp "A. WUNDERLICH NACHF., BERLIN" it has a tool with the crown style marking....the holster is in good plus condition and not dried out and stiff with a few marks and the stitching is for the most part intact....some minor surface cracking on the top of the cover flap...buckle functions fine....4 magazines are included, all with aluminum floorplates, none matching serial numbers on either pistol...2 are silver plated stamped types, one has "S" with starburst (police) it also has a 1 and the serial number. The next one has the serial number, a "d", "+", and the droopy eagle...The other two are black metal with machining marks...one has "122" on the side and two straight winged eagles with "37" underneath ...floorplate is marked with the serial number and a "c"..very minor dents on the front lower portion of the mag body....the other has "2/1001" on the side and the floorplate is forcematched "###XX's" and an electropenciled "56". All mags are at least good plus with lots of spring tension, minor wear...

Pistol #1
a 1937 S/42 all matching grips are ordnance marked but appear to have been stained or coloured to a more reddish colour than any I've seen, checkering all intact and worn flat...bore mark 8.81, right side frame marks droopy winged eagles with "63"s underneath and the two typical acceptance marks in front of the eagle on frame and barrel....all seems very typical except for the colour of the grips but then I'm no expert....bore looks about good, maybe good plus...with some darkness is the grooves but I can't find my 9mm bronze brush to give it a good scrub....90% finish some worn edges on the muzzle and sideplate, frame is slightly 'spotty' , no straw colour at all...

a 1939 42, all matching, frame has a very slight plumb colour and the ejector even more so....grips are typical wood brown and the right one has a glued partial half inch split at the top that was glued (no a bad job) with one missing checkered diamond....gripdiamonds worn at the front and rear but not excessively so....barrel mark 8.82...right side has two "straight winged eagles" over "63"s followed by straight eagle over swastika...barrel has the typical straight eagle but then its followed by a sunburst or starburst mark like this one but much more clear....

The Eagle 655 Proof reflects the that this is an 1941 produced Luger because the E655 changed in late to E135 in 1942.

The Swastika/Eagle Proof with the full wings appears on the receiver, the barrel and the left side of the front toggle link. This proof began in September 1939 and simply represents the army acceptance.

finish is 90% with wear on the left side of the muzzle, sideplate and frame as well as the front and rear of the grip, the blued areas still have a shine where pistol one has a more worn matte finish......bore looks good plus at least....
