The SP101 was originally made in 38Spl. I have one, made in 1990.
Rumour is that the cylinder is plenty strong and will tale 357 pressures. I have loaded some very hot 38 loads for it, but have stopped, for fear that one day my mini 357 round would be shot in a 38Spl.
Ruger re-designed the gun and lengthened the frame (cylinder opening went from 1.60" to 1.71") and inserted a slightly longer cylinder (0.007" longer) and stamped the gun 357Mag.
I assume, but do not know, that the new Rugers made in 38Spl are made on the longer frame.
