Tales of the Gun - Guns of the Mauser

Love all of these videos on youtube, I download all of them as I come across them in the event account is deleted or anything.

Great link buddy! :D

Good for television, anyway.

People in th "continuity" or whatever department should be told that there were the TWO important Mauser brothers..... and they were NOT interchangeable.

Using a picture of Wilhelm when you are talking about Peter Paul MIGHT be forgiven in Grade 3, but NOT from "professionals".

Yeah, I've got the ten-disc set, and it's more ‘entertainment’ than ‘scholarly.’ Worth watching for sure, don't get me wrong. It just doesn't go in-depth enough for this particular audience, gets some details wrong, and feels a bit repetitive if you sit down for a marathon of three dozen episodes. Sometimes it's surprising they even did a Mauser episode and others, given the very U.S.A. -centred view, as well. (Don't watch the Japan episode if you actually *like* Arisakas.)

It's out of print on DVD, and it can go on Amazon* for $150 and up (don't check the .ca site; they've got one at $900!). I wouldn't pay that much if the episodes can be watched on-line, but if you must have it on your shelf, just wait until you see one put up at a more reasonable price, or snipe one on eBay.

*Hey, I just noticed: they have it listed on Amazon as Starring ‘Guns.’ That's my favourite actor!

Why do you say that? I like Arisakas and I enjoyed this episode very much. I felt it gave a good brief summary of most every major infantry weapon in the Japanese arsenal. Plus, how often do you get to see footage of a Type 11 light machine gun or a rare Type 100 sub-machine gun being shot?

Oh, I like Arisakas, and I liked the episode. I'm just saying they have the usual myths and ‘last ditch, only good for one shot’ bologna.

If you watch the whole series, you're gonna see the re-enactment of the ambush of Bonnie & Clyde about fifty times. It's actually surprising they didn't shoe-horn it in to the Jap episode somehow: ‘As Admiral Yamamoto lay in wait in the bushes, the car driven by Clyde Barrow approached the mailbox on the deserted country road. As it came to a stop, he sprang into action, screaming BANZAI! as he furiously stabbed with his katana at the car and its occupants more than a hundred times.’
