Talk me into buying an SKS

Honestly? Moneys tight and there are more important things to save for. ie baby coming in a few months. I'm thinking I'd rather spend money on more handguns (more fun) than another rifle. On the other hand its still an SKS and then modification possibilities are almost endless. Hence my plea for advice.

I'm not trying to be a jerk here but honestly if the $150 an SKS is going to cost is that critical to you I'm wondering if a major cost responsibility like a child should be in the cards for you right now. Sounds like it's too late to change that fact of life but really, we're not talking a mortgage here. And if you're considering a handgun instead it doesn't sound like money is that big a concern. If you can't afford an SKS because of a child on the way you can't afford a handgun either.

^^^^^^^+1 kid first, wife second , than you....

Glad to hear you bought one!

I just bought my second - its a 1951 Tula with a laminate stock and its very nice! My first is a 1954 Izzy with hardwood stock, very nice as well.

I'm in the market for more, TSC has the Stack On 10 gun cabinets on sale, I think I'll pick up one of those just for SKS's :)

Buy one. See that all the hype isn't warranted. Sell it and buy a more modern reliable battle rifle. I chose an DA Socom 18 (m14 clone).

I was an SKS snob for years. I thought they must be junk because they were so cheap to purchase.

Eventually I bought one just because of all the cheap ammo that is available. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that the SKS is a dependable, well made little rifle. I just wish I has got one earlier.

Just remember, the Chinese army loved the SKS. It was a great rifle for backing up the AK, and 200 rounds in stripper clips is the standard combat load. Chinese soldiers did not get resupplied, so they had to make every shot count. In that regard they recognize it is superior to the AK. For a civilian role the Chinese 200 round bandoleer will last you well past SHTF.

Don't buy one, once you buy one the addiction kicks in and you buy another, and another,etc..
You will want to keep one or two standard, and you will start by modding one, then you will want to mod another,etc..

Seriously though, they are bloody nice rifles, affordable to buy, affordable to shoot, and like you already know highly modable with mods to suit every pocket,I call it the LEGO rifle as almost every mod that you do to it can be undone just as easily, and within minutes.

2nd thread that I posted this in, but I bought one today! Maybe I'll get a chance to shoot it before May, or before I buy another one.

I think this thread should be removed. I already bought the sks. Im happy with my purchase. Im assuming there is already a thread about sks's. Thanks all for the advice but I dont think this thread is relevant anymore.

I have one too but cant even shot it since my range doesn't allow steel core ammo. Anyone have a nice backyard? :D

OP I see you're also in Hamilton...

when I moved to Hamilton 3 years ago I was deciding between Burlington and H.A.H.A. IIRC Burlington was cheaper and had less limitations. (or so I thought) Really miss an outdoor range tho :/
