Talk me out of a 7mm-08AI

I haven't been since just before the range moved, but I'm thinking it's time to get a membership again. It's more convenient for load testing and plinking than where I go for most of my shooting sessions.

If you do renew hit me up Ill bring my 7mm-08 out. I live 8 miles from the range.

Great looking rifle.
What sort of glasses you gonna pewt'awn'er?

I knew a chap that sported a 30-30AI.
Sounds purrty kewl.

Need some targets ........ daggnabbitt.

Planning to put a leupold vx3i 4.5-14x40 with a 30mm tube and turrets. Decent glass at a decent price with the ability to dial up if I get the courage and right conditions for a shot longer than 400 yards. And it only weighs about 15 oz.

For now its going to wear a vortex pst 6-24x50 that will be borrowed from another rifle.

Great looking rifle, I bet it wil shoot. What are the specs?

Specs are:

Remington 700 S/A, right hand, blueprinted
Carbon Six 22" barrel, 1:9 twist, Remington Sendero Contour (which is actually just slightly larger diameter than a real Rem Sendero).
Trigger Tech Primary set at 2 lbs
McMillan Game Scout carbon fiber ("edge fill")
Alberta Tactical small bolt knob
Alberta Tactical recoil lug
HS Precision Gen 1 DBM
Cerakote is a custom color by Insite Arms, burnt bronze tinted darker with black (really turned out good)
Insite put it all together, opened up the barrel channel of the stock, bedded the action, etc.

I recorded weights for all the individual components before it was all put together, but I don't have them handy right now. I'll post them up for anyone interested.
Total weight of the bare rifle with empty magazine was 7 lb 0.8 oz.

Seems like a lot of work for something that could have been far more easily accomplished by buying a falling block and putting your barrel on it. Then if you didn't get enough oomph., ream it to a 7x64 or all the way to a 7x75.:p:p

Well life has got in the way but I've finally got some results for some load testing on this rifle so I thought it was time to resurrect this thread.

I've been working mostly with 139gr SST and Varget but couldn't seem to get groups down to a size that I suspected the rifle is capable of. I was able to push the 139s at just over 3000 fps on the high end before I was noticing some slight signs of high pressure, but the best accuracy was with 45.0 gr of Varget at about 2960 fps. Groups were roughly 1 MOA, which isn't good enough for my expectations of this rifle.

So I decided to try the same 139 SST's with H4350. A few of my manuals suggested that good velocity could be achieved with compressed loads. I'm not overly comfortable with compressing powder but I gave it a try anyway. I noticed some compression at 47.5 gr of H4350 but loaded tests up go 49.5 gr. At 49.5 my bullets were not seating to the depths my die was set for so I suspect it was compressed enough for some rebound. I shot these over the chrono at the range and only achieved velocities from 2700 fps to 2840 fps at the top end (49.5 gr). None of these loads showed any signs of pressure but none of them were giving me velocities that I was looking for. Groups were roughly 1 MOA. No go on H4350.

Next up was a combination of Nosler 140 BT and Varget. I used my data from shooting the SSTs and loaded. 44.6 to 45.2 gr in 0.2 increments. Well I think I found a nice load at 44.8 gr Varget at 2950 fps. Test groups were less than 1/2 MOA, with one 3 shot group coming in at 0.15 MOA with only 0.08 MOA of vertical dispersion. I dont expect to repeat this as I suspect there was a little luck involved, but I think that I am on the right track with this load. Next up is a few more little tweaks to see if I can improve this any more.

I am happy that the 7-08AI is producing 100-150 fps over max book velocities, pretty much right where I was hoping it would.

All testing was completed at 300 yards, and chrono was placed at 8 paces (about 25 feet) out from the firing line.

I agree, I was going to go AI 7-08 but with very little increase in velocity I saved my money and went with the standard 7-08

Depends if you're comparing real life results like those that I've been achieving or theoretical results.
I've been getting 100-150 fps over max book values with no signs of pressure (albeit my powder charge is on the upper end) out of a 22" barrel.

Anything AI-ed just sounds so much moor gooder..:)

50-100 ft/sc more...why not!

Kenny Jarrett says 3050ft/sec with 140's https://www.jarrettrifles.com/pet-calibers.html (click on the 7-08 AI box)

I was going to do a 7-08AI build but ended up going Kimber Montana 280AI instead...I'm really happy with the rifle

I won't be pushing this cartridge as hard as the guys at Jarrett Rifles, but it is fun to do something a little different than the off-the-shelf cartridges.

Just my view but any AI has a much lower resale, or at least a lower demand.

I think you would typically be correct. But in my case, I put a lot of effort into the planning process and when I have a rifle built, it's because I've planned, planned some more, saved my pennies, and have no intentions of selling the rifle. All of my rifles will have a long life with me.
