talk me out of a SW 9mm revolver

after a love hate relationship with an MP9, now I am looking at a my first SW wheel gun.
It has to be 9mm because I am all set to reload for it.

and I like this.

There's nothing to talk you out of, then. ;)

Fine. The Alfa Proj is less than half the price and you can probably order it tonight from one of the sponsors....did that do it?

Sorry, the only time I could talk anyone out of buying a Smith & Wesson revolver would be when I was trying to buy the same gun and it was the last one in the showcase. Please let us know how it is.

Talk me outta ranting about stupidly titled threads....

Buy the Smith if you can find it, otherwise as Kenny said you can get an alfa right now.

I strongly advise you against buying this 9mm model 986 revolver. You won't be happy with it. Instead, you should buy this one.....Did that help? ;)

The S & W 547 and 942 (!) are awesome revolvers. If they made the 547 in restricted, even with the lock, I'd buy one. The 9mm is a wonderful revolver cartridge, I always test new ammo in one of my 547s before wasting it in my auto loaders.

You won't be sorry. Just be sure to get a moon clip loader/unloader. And lots of moon clips and ammo!

Well, you said to talk you out of it so here goes. Much as I love S&W revolvers, those 9mm models with their too-short cylinders leave me cold....I find there's something "off" with their proportions. The 9mm round wants to be fired out of a semi-auto pistol, and revolvers crave rounds like the .357 Magnum, .38 Special, or .44 Magnum. If you're looking to spend $1200+ on a new revolver and can't reload for it, I'd be tempted to spend $700ish on a .357 revolver and $500 on ammo or reloading dies. Or, spend the $1200 on a fine 9mm semi-auto pistol to complement your M&P.

I'll give you a reason not to buy a 9mm revolver. .500 magnum, yes ammo is more than a 9mm but the first watermelon you vaporize will have you hooked.

Moon clips are a PITA. You need a tool to unload the moon clips. Of course I don't have one, gave it away. You can make a tool or buy one. S&W revolvers are good, so are Rugers but S&W have a more loyal following. If you don't like the S&W you can always sell it.

I would personally go with the 357 mag, but that's only my opinion, a set of dies arnt that much if you wanna reload.
then you can load . little powder puff loads right up to full blown wilderness protection loads if you want ....
and you don't need moon clips either ...
I like the 9 mm a lot, so I aint knocking on it at all, I just like it were it belongs, (in a automatic )
don't hate on me ,,, you asked ,,, this is my opinion ...

To tell the truth I like the 929 better...

Alright…do not buy a 9mm….buy a 45ACP…just because they make bigger holes:) and get the polymer moon-clips.
Easy to load/un-load shells without a tool and cheap $$.

I disagree with this--9mm is a superb revolver cartridge because of it's relatively short case length. There's less dead space in the cartridge and velocities tend to be very uniform when compared with .38 Special. Of course, if you're talking purely in the 'make big boom' department, the 9mm is ridiculous, but for most action shooting disciplines and very precise shooting 9mm is superb in a revolver.

As far as the gun in question, I didn't need to be talked out of one--S&W did that themselves when they made them 7- and 8-shot guns, effectively making them unusable in IDPA and IPSC (I know you can technically, but it's not worth the hassle). I probably would have pre-ordered any 6-shot 9mm S&W PC gun the day it was possible.

If you don't have to worry about that, I don't think there's a lot of compelling reasons to avoid one of these once they're available.

That 9mm looks like fun and having another gun using that calibre would be great. I like my revolvers. The 45 ACP version would likely be the model that I picked up because I already reload for it and the revolver won't gobble up tonnes of rounds or send my precious 45 casings flying. You can't go wrong although I would like to handle one of the Alfa Project revolvers - all steel.

As far as the M&P 9 goes I only have love for that gun. Great value, great shooter, I prefer it to my G17 gen 4.

I agree with master G. 9mm is a great caliber for semi-autos but if you want to get a wheel gun, experiment with another caliber like .357 magnum.
