Talk me out of a Tikka t3 Lite

Don't buy one! Why you ask? Two words: aftermarket parts! I recently was asked my advice from a novice shooter as to what he should by. His choices were the T3 and the Remington 700. I told him to first research the aftermarket for upgrades and available parts and then get back to me. He called two days later to tell me he had already placed an order for a R700 from Grouse River. He chose wisely!

Why would you need to put aftermarket parts they work fine without them

No doubt if someone wants a project rifle a Remington is the way to go. You will have to do a lot of tinkering and buying of aftermarket parts to get it up to the out of the box Tikka level. You may even get a chance to have to rebarrel and true the action as well. Yep its a potential project all right. I'v got the last 4 Remington's I bought sitting in the safe (ok it's parts and pieces of them) all of them waiting for me to make things work right, a wise decision indeed...

Except the bolt shroud.

I would add that if you are ordering a shroud also throw in a steel recoil lug if you are shooting larger calibers. My 300 WSM Hunter recently had it's shroud and lug replaced....shroud because I wanted to not because it was needed and the lug because the OEM lug was indented quite a bit.....after a lot of shooting mind you and my accuracy hadn't been effected. I guess I am just anal and it made me feel better swapping it out. The rifle is 5 or 6 years old now and neither part was a safety issue.

Where can I find a replacement metal shroud? I'm sure the stock one is fine but ....

I have my eye set on my *****FIRST***** all weather hunting rifle in a Stainless/Synthetic combo. I have never had a NEW center fire hunting rig. Shotguns and 22's yes, but not my go to rifle.

I have about $1000 to play with being a family man, raising a couple kids and keeping my sweety on the homefront.

Sooooooo. For whatever reason I feel extremely compelled to hop on the "Tikka" bandwagon.
I want it in 7mm Rem Mag.

What other sub $1000 combos would you recommend and why?

I sincerely value everyone's opinion here, so a big thank you in advance.

PS- If you know of a bargain that would be great. I am not in a huge rush as hunting season is now over, but I am definitely itching to get a new rig and work up some loads

Cheers

Mike

Given that I own six. All have performed swimmingly I'm not Your Man

Lots of great fifles out there. I ve owned 3 T3's and loved them all. One in 25-06, one in .243 and one in 308. Dont ask me to talk you out of it. Go get one! Ps: yes i did replace 2 of the 3 shrouds. Have more confidence in some kind of metal than plastic.

Sorry, can't talk you out of a Tikka as I got one myself. I spent a few months researching and eventually said screw it and ordered my 308 model through I Run Guns.
