Tanfoglio L - slide heat expansion

hey,

I noticed something interesting... The slide on my new L gets very hot fairly quickly. After that, it starts to bind, really slowing down (noticeably, you can totally trace/follow the slide movement back and forth). I thought it was dirt getting into the rails, but then I checked it when I got home, and nothing was there... By the time I got home, the slide had cooled down, and was, once against, moving just fine...

It seems that the slide expands with heat, and since the fit of the slide to the frame is so tight in this gun, it starts to interfere with the operation of the gun (once this point is reached, stove pipes come knocking).

I don't expect this to be a problem in competitions, since we never fire a lot of rounds in short period of time in matches. In practice sessions, however, shooting hundreds of rounds in a short period of time does the trick - the slide heats up dramatically, expands, and starts to bind...

sssss

I dont know much about thoses guns other than they are kind of entry level. I would suggest if its new, returning it or perhaps a trip to the smith

I would imagine that after a few thousand rounds, the tolerances will increase as a result on natural wear, limiting the effects of heat expansion. If the slide to frame fit really is super tight (like a custom 1911), you can "hand lap" the gun to loosen it up a bit.

P.S. how many rounds does the gun have to go through until the slide starts sticking?

ohhh, it's not a problem, it's just an interesting FYI, in case others see something like that in their guns and start to worry about the malfunctions.

re how many rounds - ohhh, I start to notice it after about 250 rounds or so, non stop (just pausing for mag recharging)...

Try lapping your slide, use a lapping compound and run your slide back and forth a few hundred times, clean, lubricate and test... repeat if necessary.

How do you shoot so fast and still take time to analyse your performance and write notes and results in your shoot log to track your times and improvement?

:p

funny boy... :D

I have the "L" which is hardly an entry level gun. I have had no problems with my gun after 2,000 rds. I use moly grease on my rails and it runs like a clock - a very fast clock.

Take Care

snicker

Viper has heard of dictation and video recording and doesn't want to know what ipsc1 does with them...

...but I could probably guess. :p

On the serious side Omen, I shoot my Edge until my slide is just uncomfortable to touch and then knock it off for a bit, jot some notes or observations down and generally give her a chance to cool.

I use slide glide and while I have noticed my slide slowing down a few times, I always thought it was because I was slipping into the BE zen "zone".

Then again, maybe not. :D
