Hi, I have an Eric gold custom I bought second hand off of here and I installed a henning flat trigger into it and I had a round go of just before fully in battery. Luckily I wasn't hurt and everything is ok as far as I can tell. (And I'm not a complete idiot) I believe that the trigger bar that gets released upwards when the slide is almost fully forward is worn down where it makes contact with the slide to the point where it lets the sear disengage prematurely. I have no idea of total round count but I've shot at least 5000 9major through it. I have installed a heavier recoil spring in it for the time being so that it is less likely to go off out of battery. I'm looking for advise from someone who may know or have experience similar circumstances. I tried calling Henning to get his opinion but I didn't get through to him yet. Thanks in advance.

I have not had it occur since, when it did happen I was shooting a little hotter rounds than normal and I was really busting them off. No I haven't tried it with the stock trigger, that was going to be my next step only problem is that reinstalling the stock trigger is a real bear and part if the reason I went to the henning trigger.

Ok. The trigger bar will have nothing to do with the problem you're describing. I would check the take-up and over-travel adjustments and make sure you're not riding the edge of sear engagement. If the trigger doesn't have enough room to breathe you'll end up with a damaged sear and hammer follow. Check the sear for damage to the engagement surface. If there is, that could/probably will cause the gun to follow. This would be an issue that would have occurred whether you changed the trigger or not. If it's damaged you will need a trigger job and probably a new sear.

Not a bad idea to check the underside of the sear to see if its rounded.

I bought a used stock 3 a while back that either had a poor trigger job done, or had the sear wear down because the overtravel was set incorrectly. Either way, it was allowing the hammer to drop when the safety was disengaged.

Ordered a new sear and was off to the races. Between that and the new xtreme hammer, trigger is much better.

I had a round go of just before fully in battery. .

If this is what happened than ether you may have a weak firing pin spring that got stuck on the hole and ignited the round before fully in battery , or the scenario mentioned here before you had a hammer follow due to the incorrect setting of the trigger adjustment screws that effect the way the sear and hammer interact. Let the trigger go just a touch more forward so the sear is not under pressure and fully engages the hammer hooks. See how much of the sear actually engages with hammer by cocking the hammer , keeping it from falling and pulling the trigger so can see the sear moving away from hammer. You do need 0.018 minimum sear / hammer engagement to be on the safe side. And if I may add I never liked flat trigger on pivot trigger system , if you are inconsistent to how you put your finger on the trigger you will get different trigger pull and different reset every time. The higher you go on the trigger the more heavy the trigger and less positive reset you get . Just the way this trigger system is .... I would go for a factory slightly curvet trigger to force you a consistent finger position on it, but that just me ..

Thanks for all your replies, I stripped it right down and found that my hammer and sear were very gummed up as well as the sear is starting to show wear. Also my over travel was not set properly like you all suggested. I will be replacing the sear when Freedom has them in stock this sept. As for now the gun is functioning like it should! Thanks guys for your help!

Can you post a picture of the sear?
