Always wanted one of these neat little conversions, Never seen one come up for sale so I think I’ll make my own! Always wanted a no.1 mkIII tanker.

The perfect base rifle sporter came up yesterday so I grabbed it, barrel looks to have been shortened and front sight re attached, so the “hard” work is already done,

As you can see in the photo it will need a new butt stock as well but I think I have that covered in the parts drawer.
I have a sporterized Forend and part of some top wood for a previous sporter restoration I plan to utilize, you can see the wood Iam talking about in the second photo.

My plan is to cut the wood where the barrel band would go and attach some new pieces possibly cut from the stock the rifle is coming in, the bottom should be easier that the top, it will require a ton of sanding and some inletting for the nose cap/bay lug which I’ve never attempted before.

I’ll need to buy a new top wood rear piece which seem easy enough to find.
A fellow CGN member has a nice metal parts kit for sale that I will most likely purchase as well.

Has anyone made their own tanker before?
Any tips or tricks is appropriated!
And feel free to post photos of yours! Be it a no1 or no4

Project rifle that is coming is the bottom one in this photo

And is this photo you can see the wood I’ll be trying to utilize, the top rear was used in the restoration.

I'll need to dig around.

I have one that I started to work on but never finished. I was working on the same idea as you are, splice together a forestock and make new top wood.

I did however open up the rear sight base a little and slid it back on a little closer to the receiver to improve the sight radius. But then you have to make a new shorter rear handguard.

I did do a No4 tanker a few years ago and there is a thread somewhere here about that.

I don't know if the photos are still floating around from that project.

The photos are gone on your #4 thread unfortunately, searched the forums thoroughly for anything tanker related

Wasnt it Beater who did up a few years ago? Always liked the idea myself, especially in a 45-70.

Short barrels do not kick more muzzle blast is slightly more but also closer to your face!

That rifle is easy to convert back to No. I Mk III. You just need a few parts. I wouldn't be cutting it down. Why don't you just buy a EAL.

The barrel has been shortened substantially already, unless your referring to the second Photo, that one has already been restored, just showing the wood pieces I’ll be using for it.

This is the second rifle now, just for ####s and giggles

because EAL's grow on trees :)

once bubba has hacksawed off the bayonet lugs there are few options.

now I do have one or two rusted out barrels in my stash that I think I will turn off the last 2"-3" and bore them out to sleeve a chopped barrel one day when I have time.

I'll save the barrel knox to make it into a barrel nut for when I get the parts together to make a 44 Mag or 45 ACP enfield.

now a chopped SMLE is another problem, thing is most were not cut back and the ones that were bubba went for max chop and left the barrel at 18" making a barrel extension would be a much bigger problem and not really worth the work.

Faux carbine it is

I think I built about 20 of them. some of the last ones I did I marked the buttstock with a big stamp I have here S A L & Co was the stamp id still be building them if there was lower wood out there

the 4/ mk 2 isn't mine no

im almost finished maybe my last one. used an AIA spare bolt head, got a RKS stainless bbl installed up, and chambered for 7.62x39. I used a ruger mini 30 mag fits very well. just fitting up the wood now
