Tanker style Garands

There are less than 10 REAL "tankers" They were trials rifles and were NEVER issued.
Anything else is aftermarket.

They should be good - depending on price. Just to give you an idea, someone was offering a .308 Garand with new barrel on EE about a month ago, for $650. The nice thing is that surplus .308 is easier to find than 30-06. I always wanted a .308 Garand, but for now I still have some 30-06 ammo to use up.
"...Are Tanker style Garands reliable..." Depends on who bubba'd the rifle. Some are ok. Others are junk. Even just re-barreling to .308 requires a bit more work than just changing the barrel to have the rifle work reliably.

Back in the late 80's there was an outfit called Atlantic Ordnance in the Maritimes. They offered Garands in .308. I think they were about $1000 if I recall. They were conversions with new barrels. I think they were Springfield Armoury guns.
If they are reasonably priced and you could make a deal with Milarm that if there is any function problems they will give you 100% of your money back, then it might be a fun toy.
Someone spent alot of money building these, and unless it's an estate sale, there is probably something wrong with them.

Not necessarily bubba'd. To build these all you require from a M1 Garand are: a receiver with trigger group, bolt group, rear & front sights. All which can be acquired without bubbaing a complete Garand.
I contemplated building one of these, may still do so. Would make a great 8 round bush gun with nice lines and no mag sticking out. Valley gunsmithing told me they could do it, they replace the barrel, gas system & front (shorter) handguard, recoil / return rod & spring. Throw that on a synthetic stock and you're looking good.

Now, a tanker M1 in a BM59 stock........that would be a cool project....

I was going to put one of those together. I imported a 308 Tanker kit from Numrich and have a BM59 style folder that is inlet specifically for a Garand (no cutout in front of the triggergroup for the BM59 mag). Beautifully made, nice piece of walnut with the dual leg folder, unlike the Reese repros.
Never got around to it, still sitting in the basement.

You should get on that project!!Those Milarm tankers are on consignment. The guy that built them has several there for sale. IMO some of the work is crap. Stocks have drywall screws sticking out and things like that. painted metal parts etc. Somewhere in the $1100 range i believe. Your money your call.
