Tanning hides and furs

Hey Kodiak - Borax at superstore and alum at the discount bulk store - the name of which I forget but I think there storefront is yellow. Bulk Bin or Back Tin or Bilk Ten or ... If I figure it out I will post it.

Lol, yep.

I was just about to post that I found borax in the laundry aisle, and alum and iodine-free salt at "the bulk barn"

Just a quick note. Alum & borax does not tan a hide . It is just a pickle. You won't have soft flexible leather.
 
I will post my salted dried out hides tomorrow as it is darker than a bat's colon and I don't want to bring them into the house for a photoshoot.
 
I have used black tee to tan small skins firs salt, then tan, oil, and work the hide
I hav yet to try smoke tan but I would like to give it a go
smoke tan smells so good

Very interesting.

I had spoken ti an old Indian fellow once about brain tanning.

Seems like an worthwhile process. I think I will try some rabbits sometime soon.
 
I remember watching a video on youtube, that showed brain tanning. The skin is scraped, and stretched. Then the brains are added to some water and mashed in to a paste. The paste is then applied to the skin, and allowed to dry. Then the skin is then smoked to seal it.
