The day has finally come. Tomorrow we start our adventure to the dark continent. We have a few days in the bright lights (Winnipeg) then we are off - arriving in Dar es Salaam on the 5th. A couple of days there to address the jet lag issues, then we begin hunting cape buffalo in the Selous Game Reserve on the 8th till the 17th returning to Dar on the 18th. I checked the weather on the internet last night, and the lows are in the high 40's to the low 50's, and the highs are between 80-85 degrees. Humidity while high in Dar es Salaam - about 83% it is reported as low as 52% near the hunting area.

From the 19th till the 27th is the non-hunting portion of the trip. We will tour the northern part of the country which includes - Arusha, Ngorongo Crater, Olduvai Gorge, the Serengeti, Lake Manyara, Mt. Meru, and Tarangire. We had considered a trek up Kilimanjaro, however to do it properly takes 17-21 days, and we would of been unable to extend our stay that long.

I'm sure we will return with pics to share - and a couple of good hunting tales to post.

Hunting with the "infamous" Mark Sullivan!!

So did you choose to go for the "Mark Sullivan" experience (like he displays in all his videos)?

Some of those videos he released are amazing. Shooting charging buffs at 25yds or less takes some steady nerves.

I've read a few articles (written by hunters) about people questioning his hunting ethics. Apperntly the Mark Sullivan experience involves segregating animals from their herds, surrounding them, and stressing them to the point where the animal will charge its persuars giving Mr. Sullivan his desired dramatic effect.

Having never been to Africa or hunted with Mr. Sullivan I obviously cannot speak for his actions. I only mention the above as some info I have read, it is clearly not gospel.

Having said that, what he does offer looks to be a hell of a lot of fun and definetely a once in a lifetime type of experience. I hope you have a great time.

Do we need to start a Cape Buffalo defense thread? ;)

I've been,I've done, and Bro is you in for a hoot...Take it all in. Its not a different continent, its like a frikin different planet..Bring as many little trinkets home as you can get your hands on. Buy the stuff right from the villages not at the airport. And for God's sake bring home ATLEAST one mount, you will hate yourself till the end of time if you dont. I seen the difference on peoples faces looking at my pics, then the looks when those very same mounts were on the wall, and I can tell you that with pics they just did NOT get it...I mean no pic does the same as a mount that sticks near 5 feet out from your wall

I am so jealous...
At this point in my life Africa is still a dream.
Looking forward to your pics. and tales.

Good luck and enjoy every minute.;)

Mark Sullivan's name certainly creates lively discussion. From what I've heard from people who have actually hunted with him is that he works his tail off for the client. So we'll see. If it was not for Sullivan's videos, I might still be thinking about going rather than heading out the door!

Jezzz man....I just got her settled down about the snake thing....."honest Hon, those snakes (mambas) are only in Zimbabwe - they don't come into Tanzania"

Blindside -
The cape buff heads will come home and you talked me into bringing at least one robe home as well. Good advise about the trinkets by the way.

Boomer,
I hope your trip is everything that you have dreamed it would be. My wife and I will have left on a plains game hunt in RSA before you return. My buffalo will have to wait, but am looking forward to seeing and hearing about yours.:D

Been there but not for hunting..We went to climb Kilimanjaro & sun tanned in Zanzibar. An unforgetable experience & really cheap too.

I tell you what, hunting Africa is my dream and I cannot wait. I am planning and saving for a trip in the next 5 years. I had kinda thought I'd go in the next 2-3 but I have some priorities to take care of first.

I can't wait to see the pics and hear the stories. :)

The first I noticed when I went into the jungle/savanah, is that everything is huge, even the bugs..It is big sky country overthere too.

The locals from small villages

And the great accomodations in the middle of nowhere

And best of all,the african night time bonfire, every night religiously..Almost a full year later and I still see the ladies bringing out drinks to the fireside when I close my eyes...And Like the fella said. Even if its an animal we have here, theres is ten times bigger. I dont recall any 7" grasshoppers or porcupines with 1' quils here

Did Nairobi, Lake Nakuru, Serengeti, Ngorongo crater, Zanzibar, Arusha, Moshi, Stonetown & last Mt Kilimanjaro(5 days & is NOT easy as described on tourist brochures cause of the altitude sickness).

They claim 90% achieve the summit...Bull####! More like 20-30% make it...It is the ultimate tourist rip-off/scam!

You'll need minimum 2-3 weeks.
