Yes.. I picked one up off the EE. try and find paper roll caps anywhere. they don`t seem to exist any more in Canada.
Anyway, made a bunch of double layer aluminum caps. I`d post pics but at work and didn`t take any. I grabbed a pack of cheap red plastic ring caps and scraped out the mixture that is in those. 80 red caps worth does not make a big pile of the stuff, and if you try it, don`t scrape directly over the container you are keeping the powder in. it flashes with a "woof" and your wife asks you what you are burning, you see spots while you try to put out burning bits of paper from the little red caps...... don`t ask how I know.
so last night I mixed the powder with rubbing alcohol and used a flat toothpick to drop a tiny dollop if the now gooey powder into the caps. work it into the corners of the cap.
I added .5 of a scoop (made from a small pistol primer ) of black powder and capped the lot off with a newsprint paper disk, punched out with the hole punch that comes with the Tap-o-cap, tamped down while wet with the little dowel that comes with the Tap-o- cap.
only have a very small amount of BP handy when tamping, you can imagine what may happen if one went off while tamping in a pile of loose BP. I had no such incident.
now the key part. people have reported using hairspray to lock everything together. that's ok if you are VERY gentle with them.
I used some of the wife`s hairspray WAX. ( don`t tell her)
its stickyish and stays sticky for a while. let these little things dry overnight.
anyway, I made six caps(no I did not use all the mixture, probably enough left for 20 more, maybe.) they all made a very satisfying BANG when tested this morning before work. first strike each time. I was very happy.
do this outside, wives tend not to like the smell of rotten eggs in the morning...
conclusion- while not a particularly expedient way to get caps for your percussion guns, if you like to tinker like me, its quite enjoyable. if you don`t have caps, can`t get any or SHTF, or whatever, one of these in the old toolbox won`t hurt. all I seem to be able to find is No10 caps which only the heavy mainspring sidelocks will set off first strike because they don`t sit properly on the nipples used.. my little CVA squirrel needs two strikes, but not always.
anyone know of a paper roll cap source in Canada?
