So I picked up an ATI Dragunov frock for my SKS and it went together pretty good

As I plan to mount a rail and some optics this will mean stripper clips are out so when I picked up the stock I bought 2 Tapco 5/20 round magazines.

When I fitted these I found them pretty tight to the point where switching them was possible but a pain and almost more annoying was that the bolt no longer seemed want to lock open on an empty mag. What I found was that I had to hold manually hold the bolt open to remove/insert the Magazine which was a pain for sure

Should they be tight to the point where you feel like you're gonna break something? I had a hard time pulling the release back far enough to get them out

Should the bolt stay open on the last round? Am I missing something to achieve this?

I went back to the place I got them yesterday and the guys there didn't know for sure about the bolt staying open. I`m thinking about leaving them back and getting the XCR magazine adaptor fitted instead - I assume it holds the bolt open on the last round (pretty sure I watched a video where it worked that way)

Thanks in advance

Tapco mags do hold the bolt open on the last round. They almost always require some light filing to fit into your SKS.... After u got them fitted right, they should insert in and drop out like butter.

What is happening is you didn't file enough relief around inside the magwell and it is so tight the feed lips on the mag are being squeezed together so much that the follower isn't coming up high enough on empty to actuate the bolt hold latch. Or the ridge above the mag catch is binding against it preventing free movement of the hold open latch. Orthe front/top exterior portion of the mag at the base of the duck bill is binding against the front of the magazine hollow of the reciever itself. I would file all of these areas. File inside that magwell of that stock a bit to relieve that excess preasure on the feed lips. File down the ridge on the back of the magazine above the magazine catch. Just need to flatten that spot out a bit there is about an inch but don't touch the spine on the follower itself. File down the exterior corners of the magazine at the front of the follower/base of the duckbill as well. If you had to jam the magazine in to click you'll see scuff marks where filing is needed. That said, the mags should be filed to where they are inserted and click in easily. DO NOT file any part of the follower itself. Only exterior of the magazine. If done right you'll get the same reliability as the factory mag. Hope that helps.

So what I`m finding is that I can fit the new Tapco mag without too much trouble and it does/will hold the bolt open on the last round (good) but when I swap mags the bolt still doesn't release (bad)

Where am I going wrong?

Yeah - apologies for the vague description and I can't take pictures as I am not at home right now but essentially there is a small original metal tab above the back/top of the SKS mag that both the Tapco and standard mag pushes up when empty and this locks the bolt back

When I reload the standard mag I can pull the bolt back and this small piece drops down/releases and the bolt slides forward and loads a round

When I load a Tapco mag (admittedly only tried it with a single round but that should be enough in theory) and pull the bolt back this same metal tab that holds the bolt back doesn't drop down and the bolt cannot slide forward

Is the magazine follower moving freely? There may be a burr impeding its movement.

Does the BHO tab move freely?

Compare the length of the magazine with the original if that one functions correctly. If the tapco is too long, you may need to file off a small amount of the tab on the duck bill
