Tapco/Modded SKS Issues

Howdy everyone, i've run into a small annoyance with my new bubba sks i got from Cabellas in a Tapco stock. I had modified the bolt so I can load/unload magazines with the bolt closed, and I had also changed out the mag release for a forward style release. The issue i'm running into is, the magazines will load and lock/release perfectly fine while empty, and up to 4 bullets. However as soon as I add the 5th bullet, the magazine tail sits too low and wont lock into place. It will lock if I open the bolt, and this isn't a huge issue, but it would be nice to have it fixed.

Anyone with a tapco sks or similar issue have any input for me? Is it the magazine or the bolt?

Thanks!

The issue may be the pin being just a bit too high on the magazine, only allowing you to load 4 rounds.

You are using a Tapco mag, not the standard SKS mag?

The SKS was designed to be loaded with stripper clips, so the bolt has to be open for that. It's designed to pick up the first round from an open bolt, not have 10 (5 thanks to dumb Canadian laws) rounds in the mag and a closed bolt.

Yep they're Tapco mag's, I have 3 that all are doing the same thing.

Take careful note of where round 5 bumps up against the bottom bolt surface.
Grind a gently sweeping (longitudinally) dimple into the bottom on that side so the cartridge shoulder can nest up into it.
Take minimum metal off the bottom of the bolt so as not to compromise its strength.
Test fit frequently. When done, polish out tool marks to avoid stress risers.
The finished rework should have a very aerodynamic looking sweep to it.

Had that issue years ago with newer pinned tapco mags, mine would load 5 but tight. You can re rivet them to load 5 and 1/2 slack if that makes sense, not enough play to force in a 6th round but slack enough for the bolt to ride over.
