I usually tape my barrel when hunting with my centrefire rifles. Anyone tape their barrel when using rimfire or magnum rimfire? Dangerous or not?

I couldn't imagine it being dangerous, but I could see it having a more significant effect on the accuracy compared to a centrefire.

Only one way to find out...

I don't do it, but would have no problem doing so in bad weather. I don't see it as being dangerous at all. Ive heard of guys using finger cots on the barrels rather than tape.

Tape away, your not going to hurt anything. Bananaing the barrel happens when people don't check there $%1t after a tumble. I've taped up the muzzle on rifles and muzzleloader for 20 years and have never had an issue. Most people that ##### about taping the muzzle have never done it before.

i use finger cots with a piece of tape to keep it in place. I've used them with my 7mm mag, .303 enfield, and I also find they fit really well over the flash hider on my m14 LOL
With my 7mm mag I did accuracy testing at 100, 200 and 350 meters with and without the finger cot and could not notice any measurable difference

Thanks guys. I'll try it out Saturday and let you know.

I don't use electician tape on anything but wiring .Masking tape even over old style magna-porting on a .338 win mag can't imagine a .22 RF slowing down on that.

It would seem that most people do not understand the science behind muzzle taping. When a rifle is fired the bullet forms a seal and pushes the air in the barrel ahead of it and out the end. When you tape the end of the barrel this air can not escape and as the bullet travels down the barrel it compresses this air. enough pressure is built up and blows a hole in the tape before the bullet arrives. The bullet does not touch the tape so accuracy is not affected. hope this helps.

Quoted for truth!! Dave.

I tape my barrels anytime Im outside of a range. The tape wont hurt anything but a small piece of debris in the barrel might ruin your day. One day while hunting grouse with my 10/22 I noticed a small twig sticking out of the barrel. Good thing I caught it before I pulled the trigger. Must have happened while I walked in the thicker game trails.

The French military use a condom on their rifles. The tape keeps snow out of my barrel that's why I use it.
