tapered bore?

Small hole gauges are really required for accurate measurements deeper in a bore than measuring with the tips of vernier calipers if that is what you are using. And no, unless the bore is severely eroded I have not seen tapered bores.

A forcing cone is just that ...a cone that forces the projectile to line up with the bore.
The barrel of my Uberti 1851 Navy has the rifling cut out to a depth of about 1/8 inch at the cylinder end and for about another eighth inch the rifling is tapered.
This is a new barrel made in 2010 [CF] with about 300 shots through it,so far no noticeable wear.

Some of the 450 3.25 express rifles have tapered bore's as in .460-.462 at the chamber end tapering down to .458 at the muzzel I was told the theory was to reduce recoil and increase velocity.

My Martini Henry 577-450 has the first 8 inches or so around .468 and tapers to .464 at the muzzle. When i slugged it it went down smoothly then dropped free as the barrel opened up near the chamber.
