Hello im thinking of getting a non restricted ar and am looking at the HK SL8 and the Tar 21. Any thoughts on either of these rifles? any other non restricted rifles that are not hard to find would also be looked at. ps: does anyone know if anyone has any Tar 21s in stock?

I would suggest Tavor on the basis that they're rumours H&K is or have discontinue production on SL8.
Besides, why would you want "The Ugly Cousin of the G36"?

as it will be used mostly on a private range it will see both bench work and off hand shooting (probably more off hand, bench just for accuracy tests)

For the SL8 you'll need the AR mag well adapter, there's no threading so if you want a flash hider or brake you'll need to do that as well, the stock sucks so you'll also need a new lower receiver and folding and/or collapsible stock. That's easily going to run you $750+ more than the Tavor.

for off hand shooting. i hope you are built well if you think you are gonna shoot the SL8 off hand for any length of time. they are not that easy to shoot offhand. my dad has one and its much better for prone bypod shooting

Oh, not really... ;)
G36 (clone) = Tavor + FS2000
G36 (actual) = Tavor/ACOG + FS2000/Elcan Spectre + cash to spare

G36 clone is not as expensive as ppl make it out to be. You'd be surprise how much you can get for the old SL8 parts.
Rifle, $1650 used, mint condition.
Sold SL8 barrel assembly for $650
Sold SL8-4 top rail $40
Bought G36k barrel assembly and G36c top rail for $600 (lucky deal)
Sold SL8 stripped stock for $120
Bought Stock Block and G36c stock, with pin for $320
Bought G36 FBI lower for $200
Sold G36 FBI lower internals/parts kit for $160 (only for real G36 users)
Sold SL8 mag for $50
Bought 8 G36 mags at $80 each
Added extended bolt release for $35.

That's not anywhere near $4000+ dollars. Took about 8 months to get all the parts.

Great rifle in either configuration, depends what floats your boat.
Just my 2 cents.
