hey all
I'm thinking about getting into target shooting a 22. I currently have a nice little lever action winchester but would like to build a nice little target gun.

just not sure exactly where to start. I'm thinking I'd like a bolt action, for their accuracy and also I just like how they work. that being said I'm left handed so would be looking for a lefty and haven't seen many around. pretty much just wondering if I could get some idea's of a decent gun to start with that I can build as I go. I'm not looking to spend alot to start but am willing to put money into as I go along so some idea on what to look for would be great.
thanks

Your best bet would probably be a CZ 452 left hand model. The CZ series have very good accuracy and features (ie trigger) that can be refined if need be.With a dovetailed receiver ,optics can be mounted easily. As with any 22RF you will have to try several brands and grades of ammo until you find a real standout. This does depend on how much accuracy you want. There are not many choices in left hand RFs without considerable more expense.

What kind of targets do you want to shoot? Before we can make suggestions we need a bit more info on what you're looking to do.

I'm a lefty, and I prefer stainless guns, so I'm always keeping an eye out for suitable options. For a boltgun, people seem to like the Mark II BVSS, of which they make a lefty version (Mark II BTVLSS). Two things to keep in mind: a) It has a 21" barrel, so it's probably better suited to bipod or bench shooting, and b) It comes with a lefty-biased thumbhole stock, so it won't be great if you want to give your righty friends a try. I don't own one, but I would buy that model if I didn't already have a scoped 22 rifle.

What's your definition of "target shooting" ?

If it includes shooting at ISSF target, as in sporting/match rifle class... just buy a Anschutz and be done with it.

"Building" a target rifle is NOT a cheap process... You're better off buying a proven design from a proven brand.

The Anschutz-CIL 190 are probably the cheapest 'target' guns around.

not really looking to get into any bigtime competitions just some playing at the range. maybe some competitions down the road. I'm looking at just getting something I can put a scope and bipod on and take to the range that will have good accuracy (keeping in mind I'm looking bolt and left handed). but something that with time/funds I can build on to and make better.

The savages are good out fo the box shooters to start out. Later on down the road, there are without a doubt countless things you could do to improve upon. See if you can find a model tht you like, and whether or not it comes with a precision action (savage makes "regulat" and precision machined actions). After that, a high quality barrel, different stock, better optics, the sky's the limit and it can be done in a modular fashion.

I lived in your area a few years ago, and know there used to be alot of sillouette shooting at a few clubs. Yarmouth, Pubnico and Port Maitland area.
Im not sure if they are still active but Pubnico had a nice range for all kinds of rifle and pistol shooting. As for the target shooting, ive just purchased a Savage Bull Barrel .22lr and it shoots awesome groups at 50 yrds. As a previous person mention, find the ammo your particular rifle likes and stick with it. It took me 3 different brands to find the right one.
I havent had the chance to shoot the CZ, but wouldnt hesitate to give that firearm a try either.

Good luck finding your LH .22

yea pubnico does have a nice range. I actually just joined the range in meteghan. I'm thinking as funds dictate I'll be looking for a Mark II BTVLSS. but with it being hard to find a decent bolt in left hand (for good price) I'm also now considering a semi. maybe something like a remington 597 lss. really like the wood grain/ stainless barrel look.
