Good day,
I would like to buy a steel plate as a gong for my shooting, 12x16 inch approx.
the shop in town have some T400, 1/2 inch, 12x16" = 91$ + taxes.
I was thinking about the AR500, but I will have to place an order. he doest have any in stock at this time.
the cost of the AR500 at this time is unknown.
Do you think the T400 would be good enought ?
to handle a 300 Mag at 200m and beyond ?

I think T400 is the same stuff that is used to repair the buckets on some heavy equipment. If so, it's the same stuff that I have been using for the past few years and has held up quite well. Frome 223 at 25yds to 338RUM out to 300yds it just washes the paint off. You should be GTG.
Regards.

IIRC the t400 is not as hard (brittle) as ar500, but has a greater flex and spring to it which means it will actually last longer than ar500. The ar500 ends up cracking.

Regular t100 is 3x as hard as mild steel and is what I use for my rimfire targets. 22lr does nothing to the 1/4" plate. 7.62x39 czech surplus puts a good dent but won't penetrate.

T-400 Should be adequate for your target. You should get good like out of it, AR 500 and similar steels are a bit better at abrasion wear i.e. sand, gravel, etc sliding over them. QT-400 will have good impact toughness and 1/2" should stop 300win mag at those ranges without too much damage to the plate.

I have a gong made of either T-400 or AR-400 steel, and at 100 yards my 338 lapua only makes little craters on it. So does .308, 30-06, and 45-70. Each hit will do a little damage to the plate, but it will still take thousands and thousands of rounds to wear it out!

I use old track pads off track hoe's donno what it is but iv bounced everyrhing off it and no damage yet. Price was right too. 0$
