Your choice on a new target rifle, if you could only have one - which of these has the highest fun-factor?

Get a Mini-14 target?

700P or SPS in .308?

700/similair bolt in 30.06 so it could be used to hunt as well?

Yes, budget is $2K after glass, bipod etc

What kind of target shooting? Long range target shooting requires a good barrel(preferably match grade), trigger, sights and ammo(definitely match grade).

Hahaha - my shooting is not long range, out to 100-200 at the most. And by 'targets' I also mean gophers at and around 50 yards

I like the idea of it being bolt, but I also like the mini-14, and that's my dilemma

Remington 700 or, IMHO the best bang for your buck, a Savage.

In .308 of course.

+1
.308 is a very versatile caliber that could be used for target shooting as well as hunting.
However, for the shorter range and gopher .223 would be more than adequate.

i recently purchased the rem 700 sps in .308, and even though i only put maybe 12 rounds through her yet, it was humbling and fun at the same time but as for a gopher i dunno what would be left of the poor little guy after being hit by a .308

For j-word bullets, hart barrelled, Stolle Panda, in 6mmbr or PPC, for cast bullets..same gun in 30BR....For long range work.....Sharps 74 or Highwall in BP 45/70.

Is the mini-14 accurate enough to kill a gopher at 50 yards? Don't know. :p
