Target Scope Selection.....Help!

I bought a Nightforce NXS 5.5-22 about a year ago and have been very happy with it, pricey though ( $1800 or so if I recall correctly). Elev and Wind tracks perfectly every time. With 100moa of adjustment this scope will easily take a .308 out to its max range of 1000yds. The glass etched reticle is quite fine and doesn't obscure smaller targets at longer distances. My only complaint (and its small) is that to change the magnification you rotate to entire eye piece which can cause flip up scope covers to get in the way of the bolt. I believe Corlane Sports, Hirsh Precision, and Shooting Edge all carry NF scopes but there are probably others aswell.
 
For your budget, Elite 4200 6x24 AO scope will do all you could ever want. Mechanically, it is equal to any scope as the turrents do work. Optically, the clarity and resolution is right up there with the best and better then most.

Used, these are right in your price range. New, they are a little more.

For new, I can now strongly recommend the Nikon Monarch 4X16 side focus. I just got mine and am very impressed with the optical quality. Not as good as the Elite 4200 but right there with the Leupold VX-III's. They come with target turrents and quite a lot of internal adjustment. They have a solid history of properly working mechanicals.

New, these scope retail in the $500 range. They also come with such niceties as a BDC or mil dot reticle. Lots of eye relief too.

The nikon buckmaster is my favorite low dollar variable. Glass is really quite decent and the mechanicals work. It just feels like you are looking down a small tube as the eyepiece is not a wide angle type.

Elite 3200's have solid mechanicals and decent optics. Both are under your budget.
