target shooter police harassment?

i'm really wanting to get into IPSC shooting but my hubby is being a pain about letting me buy a handgun! my husband is concerned about having the police showing up at our door at all times of the day and night harassing me(us) and wanting to see my safely stored pistol and ram sacking our home.:eek:

I'm wondering how much of a problem this is for Canadian handgun owners?

what about if we get stopped for say "speeding",will the police insist on ripping apart my vehicle to see if i am transporting today with an ATT?:rolleyes:

Please clarify...?

Are you hypothesising that you get caught speeding, and they tear apart your car looking for a gun when you don't have it..? Won't happen...

Or that they do the same, but while you do have the gun in the car AND the appropriate documents to go with it (but they just rip sh!t up anyway)...? Won't happen...

They provide you the opportunity to tell them you have the gun int the car, and provide them the neccessary documents along with showing & giving them the gun to inspect.

First thing to remember is that the police can not search your property with out reason/ probable cause. So they can not come into your house unless invited or domestic disturbance, etc.
If you get hit for speeding, when they ask where you are going in such a hurry, just do not say to the range/ to a match.
In sort they have enough to do with out going to every house that has a gun registered.
 
Ahahahah funny tread.....they don't care about registered firearms....if they stop you and you have a firearm just mention it and say you are going to a range, I got out of a ticket once that way....some of them love legal gun's :). The worst that can happen is they want to look/fondle it....especially if you have an chrome Open Gun ;)

Wonderful first post.

I came first in my class at OPC in "insisting on ripping apart vehicles". I found "ram sacking" to be much more difficult. I could catch the rams but I had alot of trouble getting them into the sack.

Tell him that in this shooters 21 year experiment with target shooting and IPSC in Ontario, I've never had the negative experience your hubby is worried about.

I've been pulled over for speeding or ride checks, with guns on board, and never had it come up.

I've been pulled over a bunch of times with some major firepower in my covered truck bed or covered in the back seat of my truck (legally transported) and never once did it occur to me to tell the officer what's in the car. They were usually focused on my recent demonstration of my high-performance driving skills. :D

I don't have to declare the firearms are safely stored & transported in the vehicle - unless the officer asks about them.
(Which has never happened in over 20 years) So I never do.

As they say, why poke the bear? (No disrespect to LE intended, of course.)

As for the house, I have never had a visit by LE or CFO regarding my personally owned fireams, and if anyone is on someone's radar - I'd be one of 'em.
 
Why don't you call your CFO and ask them to do a pre-inspection of your storage and transportion equipment and procedures and issue a letter of compliance. Then go out and buy your handgun. The purpose of inspection is to detect non-compliance and confiscate firearms. A new RPAL holder is most likely to be in compliance. An older POL (valid) holder is slightly less likely to be in compliance. An older FAC or POL (expired) holder is least likely to be in compliance, unless they've long-since disposed of their firearms. This latter group is the group that is targeted by the CFO and police at the present time. The first group and second group is really a waste of time and resources.
 
Your house and your car is your property, they cannot just search it with no reason and without a warrant. If they knock on your door or stop you on the street; without a warrant, just tell them nicely you do not give them permission to search your property.

And, I have a "Collector" status with my PAL; CFO has the right to check them once in a while but for so many years they never check them once.
