Had a buddy recently ask if it was okay to shoot paper on Crown Land - I honestly don't know.

I don't have my book handy to check and havn't been able to find a conclusive answer online.

It is. A lot of guys will say to make sure that you have your hunting and small game license so that if a Conservation Officer stops you you'll be legal since in most places certain game like coyotes are legal to shoot year round.

However as long as you are obviously target shooting I.E steel gong and other targets set up, a table to shoot off of,o spotting scope etc. and no signs of poaching then you will be fine. A friend and I spent a few days camping along a hydro line doing long range shooting and I am confident that any CO would not have tried to charge us with poaching or anything due to our very obvious target shooting setup.

I think this may vary from province to province.

From my brief look into the matter, it sounds like it's a no-no in Nova Scotia, but other provinces are more lenient. Best bet is to contact your CFO and ask them.

It's not uncommon to get harassed by a CO while target shooting on Crown Land. Remember, they almost always (around here anyways) approach the situation with an accompanying RCMP officer, and have a way of intimidating people who don't know how do stand up for themselves.

Know your rights and what you are allowed to do on Crown Land. I got my hunting licence for this very reason - so I don't get hassled when out in the bush (and to shoot yotes) :D

Again? Depends on where the land is. Any Crown Land close to any city will also be used by skiers, hikers, picknickers and other riff-raff. You have to be absolutely sure of what and who is or may be behind your back stop out to several miles.
It's a whole lot less fuss to join a club.
