Target shooting with my AR?

It dawned on me today that I had only shot my AR system (RRA A2, 16", standard butt stock, peep sights) a number of times and the novelty soon wore off. My local range is only 100 yards and so it is often very boring to go and shoot some of my WWII battle rifles, M14, etc.

My question is this: I would like to get into precision target shooting using my AR. What category does this fall under? What are the typical distances used? 100, 300 yards? Targets used? Association to become a member of. Competitions, training etc? It's obviously not long range bolt action (.308, 300 WM, 338 Lapua) shooting. How does one become an AR competition shooter in Canada? We don't have a camp Perry here do we?

I don't think anyone shoots Camp Perry style anymore. Our service rifle lineage more went from issue rifles into two branches; positional shooting with whatever rifle you want, and TR.

You would be best served to find a NSCC service rifle club. You will shoot standing sitting and prone at 100-500m. Rapid fire, and slow fire. I am not sure if there is one in your area, but you are welcome at our match near Calgary Sunday if you have a real itching.
 
Talk to the BCRA tactical guys and there is a huge range of fun you can have. There are also options like 3 gun which should start to incorporate some accuracy at longish distances.

The Club in Vernon did shoot service rifle for a bit but they are just getting their range up and going. Not sure what is happening in Kelowan but there are murmurs from the Joe Rich club about doing 300m comps.

Finally, there is F class. You will shoot in F TR. put on a bipod, single shot follower, big A$$ scope and come on out. Next match is Sept 24/25 in Kamloops .

Alfonso what we have is much more fun than camp Perry! During a BCRA service rifle event you will shoot your Ar from 1-500m at military figure targets.You will shoot prone but also standing,sitting and kneeling.You will shoot moving targets and you will have to jog a little and shoot while your breathing is a little faster.You will shoot rapid fire strings and you will shoot snap matches where the targets are only exposed for a few seconds. Not only that but you'll be forced to do it in the company of a lot of like-minded individuals who are more than happy to help a new guy out.
The unfortunate part is that the service conditions season is already over.We shoot mainly in the spring/early summer.
We also shoot service pistol and have a sniper/precision match available.
Feel free to ask any other questions you might have.

I am also interested in this sort of shooting and I have a rifle or two that might qualify. Is the information only on w ww.bctacticalrifle.com ? There doesn't seem to be a whole lot on the site about up coming shoots and the course of fire link won't open (using a Mac).

What event is on Sept 24/25 in Kamloops? and who is running it ?
 
Sept is Farky and is run by the KTSA in Kamloops. This is an F class match - 300 and 500m. There is a post in the LR comp forum.

Thanks for the information. So I do want to participate in "Service Rifle" shooting, but living in Vernon where do I get started, or who can teach me the ropes? How do I get in contact with the BCRA? Where are they based out off?

Contact 'em and you'll find that they'll help you. Most shooters will go out of their way to help a new shooter, including letting you shoot their gussied up target rifles. Just go to a practice match. There are modest entry fees to shoot. BCRA membership isn't ugly either.
Camp Perry is in Ohio and is heavily sponsored by the U.S. Civilian Marksmanship Program. There's nothing like it here other than the DCRA. No rifles sales through the DRCA.
 
You can pretty much run whatever you want in NSCC competition.

There are no rests though -- well, you can shoot off a legitimate magazine. And you have to shoot the same rig standing, kneeling, and sitting, so you don't want to go too hubble.

It is really a shooter first competition.

Game on tomorrow for those in the Calgary area.
