Looking for advice and opinions. Bought a heavy barrel Savage Mk.II last year that came with a lovely thumbhole stock and a cheap scope. Passed off the scope, as I wanted something more "target" sight like and bought an EGW rail and a Vortex red dot. Okay, not exactly "target" sights, but better than nothing...

What options are there, if any, for something more proper in the way of target sights for this sort of rifle? Are there diopters/target sights that can be mounted to a scope rail? How about clamp on front sights - as the barrel has no provision for a front sight?

Does it have the drilled/tapped holes on the left rear side of the receiver? If so you should be able to hang a micrometer sight on the back and rig up something for a front sight using a barrel band.

There are micrometer sights made to mount on a scope rail, but they can be pricy. And often they sit quite high as many are intended for use on a flat top AR match rifle.

I'm looking for some sort of target sight, diopter/peep/ghost ring, what ever you'd like to call it.

The receiver does not have any side mounting provision for sights like the Lymans. Thus, the interest in finding something that can either mount to the EGW rail; or removing the rail and using the screw holes to mount a rear sight in that manner - and then a clamp on front sight.

Yes, look at the Savage Mark 2 FVT I think is the model? It comes with aperture sights and I believe they are Lyman.
I had one of these and it shot well but moved up to Anschutz.

The FVT comes with Williams sights, which are basic enough and for the rear, screw into the side mounting tab. However there are some companies that make a 11mm base for the MkII so that more typical target aperture sights (eg. Anschutz, Gehmann, etc) can be added.

Of course, this is a bit of an expensive way of going about it. Typically, this is only "practical" for those building club/entry-level rifles (esp biathlon) where the barreled action is the cheapest part since sights alone will cost much more than the rifle.

Alternatively, you already have a rail base, so you could put a more generic rear peep sight (eg Techsights) and suitable front. Or you can get a gunsmith to drill and tap the side and to allow for a side mounted sight like Williams, Lyman, etc.

Look for an 11mm rail and slide an Anschutz sight on the rear. Barrel band might need to be custom made and throw on an Anschutz front sight.

Thanks gents, things to mull over and research.

Most straightforward way is to get a Mark II FVT (couple of them in the EE including mine) and fit it to the stock you want. You only need to relieve a little bit of material to accommodate the side mount. Most guides online seem to do so to fit target-style stocks like the Boyd Pro Varmint, but I don't see why you couldn't do that with the thumbhole. (And I agree, the thumbhole is the most comfortable of the Mark II stocks I've tried)

A good gunsmith would be able to drill/tap your rifle for open sights -

I'm fairly happy with the rifle I have, so purchasing another barrelled action to get the Williams sights seems like not the best solution - that and the Williams/Lyman sights aren't all that impressive, in my opinion.

Having said that, for the time being I'm not going to be spending the price of the rifle or more to put target sights on just now. I will continue looking into the various diopter sights available and see if I can find one that mounts to a rail - if not, an 11mm rail will likely be required and then it's just a question of which brand to go with for the sights. Obviously a clamp on front sight tunnel would be required, unless the services of a smith are sought to work on the barrel (hopefully avoiding that, though).

As far as I'm aware, the majority of the biathlon diopters are designed for the Anschutz 11mm rail/mount.

Yes, essentially all biathlon as well as other targetsports diopters are meant for 11mm dovetails. As I said in the previous post, this would be an expensive way to go about it and typically only done for club rifles (ie cheap Savage Mk II barreled action or similar and put expensive stock, adaptor rail, Anschütz or Gehmann sights, etc so that young athletes can try out and share rifles before going to a 1827F)

There's only a handful of people making MkII 11mm adaptor rails and the rear sight alone is more expensive that the rifle (However, you can find some used ones for the $150-200 range.)
