Nice work Rob , looking forward to installing many of those on my client's rifles.
Keep the canadian, " made here at home ", products flowin :D

I am probably uber fussy, but I would like it better if the rail was mounted flush with the stock instead of hanging down so much. I would imagine the upward pressure exerted by something at the far end of the rail such as the verticle grip would eventually over stress the screws going into the wood. Kind of a teter totter effect for lack of a better description. I know I am probably the only one who will offer constructive critisism and I mean no dissrespect to your work. You asked. I guess a long term test will tell. If nothing else, I would find it more astheticaly pleasing to see it flush. Keep up the good work though.

Yeah the next prototype will sit more flush but with the"consistancy" of chew wood I dont want to make it super tight because I am scared it wont fit all rifles, I will put up pics of gen 2 prototype when I get it finished the fit should be much better. Are you guys ok with removing wood if need be?

That's not a problem modding the chu stocks for most people but if I may add Robmcleod82. Why not create a base plate inside of the stock that petrudes 2 bolts threw the sling holes were the rail is attached. There for by tightning these two bolt's it will snadwich the rail with the stock. Just an idea though. Still love the concept!

Hey Rob,

Are you planning on making the rail installable on the fibreglass USGI stocks? I know I could just call you and ask but I'm sure I am not the only one on here with that question.

I'd be fine with it, provided I ended up with a flush mount! In fact, I'd probably do it anyway, just to get there...

A good idea would be to make a template for those who would be removing wood - maybe just a thin piece of aluminum etc. which could be put into the drilled holes with built-in pegs and used to scribe a line for chiseling out? I think the aftermarket installers - let's say you get a dealer contract for these items, perhaps? - would appreciate the ease of use when someone sent in a stock to be done by them.

Not to hijak but I do offer rail and installations of rail to wood or fiberglass stocks, in any configuration.
I also plan to bring Tartan's products into my inventory. I had the chance to have Rob over to my house for coffee and an evenin shootin the Sage at a local range.
I'm confident any products Tartan brings the plate will be of outstanding quality and functionality. The man has resources ;)

Now that I am awake and thought about it, why do you need the extra piece of metal added to the rail. Couldn't you just screw a picatinny rail to the stock ? A little epoxy and some short wide very course thread screws should hold even in Chuwood. Seems simpler, but of course anyone can do that I guess. Are you trying to create a unique product where an easily accessible product might work just as well ? I just can't understand what the extra block of metal is for. Love your other products by the way. I think if you come up with a logical reason why we need your new designed doodad, than we will all rush out and get one.

I had thought about making a plate for inside the stock I will mess around and see what I can come up with, the washers under the bolt heads in the countersunk holes in the stock seemed quite sturdy.

I felt the mounting boss was the best method as it utilized the already existing holes in the stock, and disperesed the stress from tacticool goodies hanging off it over a large area (and I thought it looked better). Gen 2 will require the drilling of an additional hole near the rear of the rail so a third bolt can be added. The reason why you will need this new doodad is because it is cool

Yes I will be building one for the USGI stock as well.

I hate to let you Hijack but seeing how you do such nice work I will let you away with it this time ;)

A long rail that would fit the USGI stock would be awesome. Even if it required drilling a couple holes, the long rail would act as a solid stabiliser to reinforce the stock once mounted(which may involved epoxying the screws).

For the original swivel area: This can be adjusted easily with some washers.

how much longer would you like the rail to be, I was thinking of offering 2 lengths one about the same as the original and one that came back almost all the way to the mag well

:agree: on the longer rail...+1 on the idea :D, would this rail work with the polytech m14's with the black plastic polymer stocks too.

cheers

I like the idea of a lower rail for a bipod, but practically, it doesn't get a lot of use and on an M14, I like to grasp the front edge of the magazine or just forward of it on the stock when shooting. I also use my sling to firm things up, hence, I have a good Turner sling. I would not want my arm extended as far as that forward grip. The forward grip makes more sense on a shorter rifle, not a long one. A smaller forward grip closer to the magazine would be more my style though. I'd add a smaller side rail. There are 3.5" pictainny rails in the EE for $12 shipped. Or, I would pickup that UTG rail for the front end.

Personally, I'd like to see one that does go all the way back to the mag well. This would give the user more ability to adjust where he may mount a bipod or even(god forbid) a short vertical grip.

The long rail bolted at several places to the stock also serves to increase the stability of the stock itself.
