Tasco 6-24x42 Mil-Dot scope, any good?

Hey all,
I currently have a Burris FF 11 (3-9x40) on my Rem 700VS but was looking at trying a higher mag scope for a change (shooting targets,etc). Anybody know if the Tasco 6-24x42 scope with mil-dot is any good or worth the money. I don't want to spend a lot of money but don't want to buy junk either, I like the Burris but just want to try higher magnification for awhile.

What do you think?
 
I think the tascos are worth the moeny, but after shooting a Burris (or even an Elite series bushnell) you probably won't be happy with the Tasco.

I hade one, worked fine, not the best glass.
 
FWIW, I once owned a pair of Tasco binoculars, and they were awful. I now own a nice pair of Bushnells.
 
The Tasco would be a step down in performance. For a step up, with higher magnafication, take a look at the Leupold VX-II 6-18X, Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24X or if money is an issue, try the Bushnell Elite 3200 5-15X

Tascos are mostly entry level optics and for the most part offer decent performance for their price, but at longer ranges, their drawbacks become a lot more apparent.

You'll be much happier spending a little more for a better scope.
 
I have that same Burris FF 11 (3-9x40) on a tikka and i love it, i have also tried the tasco 16x42 and i have a tasco 6-24x42 on order for a .222. The Burris is a lot clearer and a better scope but for about 100 bucks for a tasco 24 power, its worth a try. Can't beat the price and its not like it doesn't work its just not as good of quality.
 
more magnification doesn't mean more image. A cheap high magnification tasco will make everythin bigger, but with less definition/sharpness. You won't be able to see any more detail with it than with a very sharp 9x scope.

I have to agree with this. It works great up to 20x but then the contrast / focus goes to pot. For $100 it's a pretty decent scope. I have one on my 17HMR and was hitting gophers at 150 yards with it yesterday. I have another on my 6mm and it did the square test pretty well. Once I can afford better scopes, they are going to be shelved or sold cheap.

You also might want to take a look at Nikon scopes. The glass is very nice and some models offer 1/8" adjustment, side paralax and target turrets at a pretty reasonable price, in the $300.00 to $ 400.00 range.
I mounted a 4200 Bushnel 6 x 24 x 40, milldot, side paralax with semi target knobs on my .308 heavy barrel Savage. Really like that scope and the price at
$ 679.00 I thought was well worth it.
The Tasco, as mentioned, is an entry level scope and works well if you stay below 20 power. You will find the glass a bit yellow when you look through it but for the money, just over $ 100.00 it will do OK.

For $100 I guess its really not a bad scope but IMO you would be much better and would save your self a lot of time by going right to a Bushnell 3200 or 4200. I had a Tasco for a while but had problems with the windage not working. It worked well for time beeing however and served for a good starting scope. You also may find that it might not be able to handle the recoil of a heaavey kicking gun. If I were you though I would not get this scope and would instead look at a more expensive scope. If there has been one thing I have learned from buying optics is that like almost anything; you get what you pay for :).

Mediocre at best, fit and finish is worse now compared to two years ago. Ok for a pellet rifle or .22 plinker. Even a Bushnell Banner 4-14 is a much better scope.
 
I bought one for my 17HMR since I was tight on money.
Regret it every time I go out. Nice and clear at 6-12 power but after that it goes to crap. Eye relief seems to be really touchy as well.
Adjustable Objective seemed to work ok.

But then again it has slain lots of Gophers, so It does work.
 
I have a 2.5-10 Tasco Var/Tac on my Savage 12 in 204 Ruger. It's optical clarity isn't very good....not even close to my Leupold VXII....but I had to try it out. Seems reliable enough, though.
 
I have two 2.5X10 Varmints mounted on .22 rifles and am happy with them. I looked through a friend's 6x24 Varmint and I thought it was 'darker' and less clear than my 2.5x10's. I know of some people who have them on their centrefire rifles and they are satisfied with them but they know what they have................a low priced, entry level scope with a fair amount of 'features' for the money. If they 'crap' out on you, send it in for warranty work. Yes, there is definitely better out there but the Tasco Varmint isn't meant to marketed to compete with 'high end' or higher priced scopes. Comparing the Tasco Varmint to a Leupold, Nikon or Bushnell 3200/4200 is like comparing a Hyundai to a Lexus/Infiniti/Acura. ;)
 
No, they are CRAP. Now go out and find a dealer who sells Leupolds for a reasonable amount. You'll shoot better with a cheap Weaver 4x than a Tasco 24x. If you want a cheap scope grab an empty paper towel roll and stick some paper clips in it for a reticle... about the same level of a Tasco... but even cheaper. Can be mounted with rubber bands... optional.

If you can't see it, you can't hit it.
